This sounds much like Fujifilm's XT-1 light leak issue. While the 810 defect is not a light leak, Nikon is dealing with this just as openly and quickly as Fujifilm did.

I applaud Nikon's efforts wrt this particular advisory. I just wish they'd be more consistent with this kind of approach.
Some D810 owners are saying "Why bother? I don't shoot long exposure anyway?" But not doing so becomes a perceived devaluation point if they try to sell the camera at a later date with full disclosure.
Also, who knows how long Nikon will fix this (parts, if needed, may become unavailable at some point in time) and even if they do so long-term, there's no telling if they will do it for free down the road.
So, if anyone owns an impacted D810 (check the serial number), it would be good idea to get this done.
