Nikon F2 Gas

help, I'm infected with the Nikon F2 worm, I know the F is more classic and iconic, the F3 is more refined and the better camera, but something is tearing me towards the F2, is it the design, is it the full mechanical? I'm looking for a plain prism one.. please help to avoid this Gas Attack and talk it out of me 😀

F2's with metered prisms can be had at near-bargain prices. plain prism? aieeeeeeeeeeeee!

Let's see...talk you out of buying a F2. 😀 The F2 is the last of the hand assembled Nikons, a refined F, a classic in it's own right. You can put a DP-3 on it and take advantage of the silicon-blue low-light metering qualities or a DE-1 (as your flavor) for the pure simplicity set-up & don't even get me started about the Nikkor glass.
Have you been talked out of it yet?🙄

The beauty of F2 GAS is that it is affordable.

Buy one, and enjoy it.

And should the GAS dissipate, you will get your money back.

That i had to have another Planar
The 50 1.4 which Demanded an F body

Sure beats the cost of Leica gear ...another thing to be THANKFUL about ...😉

A plain prism can be over $300 alone. That should help🙂.

I've owned the F, F2, F3 at one point or another. The F is the cheapest and most simple (and very rugged, like all of these cameras). The F2 was very nice -- rounded edges, a very short winding stroke, the 1/2000th shutter speed, etc. The F3 had the best viewfinder and best meter (Aperture-priority AE with a lock is the best way to go, IMHO), but I didn't really care for its displays.

Which do I still have? An FE and Leica IIIf 🙂. If you're going to just manual meter, I'd say an FM2 or FM2/n. Why? They're cheaper, they have meters that actually work (all but the latest F2 meters are horrible with ring resistors), a wider shutter speed range, brighter finder, faster flash sync, cheaper motor drives and the displays are the best. They aren't the "professional" model, though, so a) they usually haven't had the crap kicked out of them, and b)they won't break your neck if you trip and fall 🙂.

Just do it. They are awesome. If you don't need a meter you can get them in BGN condition/meter inoperable super cheap, that's what I did. I use it as my camera to take camping - rugged and reliable and if it gets dumped into water or stolen, I'm not out much $ with it wearing non-AI 50mm f2 or 35mm f2.8.

The F2 was my first real camera (1977). I've since added an F3, F4, and various Canon and Leica cameras...but the F2 is the camera I want to be buried with (after I'm dead, of course).

A 95+% DE-1 went for 280 on the bay a few weeks ago. That was a good deal...


Then after you finally get a F2 Eye-level all of sudden you will find yourself looking at Titans...LOL

...the F eye level prism will also work on the F2, so there's another reason for you not to get one. 🙄
The F3 is nice, but you need to carry spare batteries, 🙁 not with the F or F2. 😀
