Nikon F3-HP prism cleaning

Hello,
I'd like to clean the HP prism of my Nikon, and I'd like to do it by myself... :D

It's not that dirt, just some dust.. is it an easy task? Some of you have any instruction or suggestion?

Thanks!
Rob.

It might be dust on the focus screen. Try cleaning that first, it might solve your problem.

Did it already :) and the mirror too.. the dust is inside the prism, distributed in a very even manner on the second glass (inner element) from the eyepiece (not sure I was able to describe what I see)

Rob.

On my F90, I can easily unscrew the eyepiece, to get to the second layer. Would that be the dusty part?

Also, did you remove the focus screen to clean the part between the screen and prism?

The prism on the F3 is removable and I did remove it... cleaned all the accessible parts but the "second" glass from the eye, that is not reachable as far as I can see.

Not sure, maybe I am missing the easy way to get to it..

Isn't inside the second glass surface from the eye a solid piece of glass -the pentaprism itself?
Rob, you didn't rewspond to the question of if you unscrewed the eyepiece.

I don't have a Nikon F3 so I can only make wild guesses :)

Did you try this? (see images)

(However, with the F90 there seems to still be an air gap, with some dust inside, even with the outer eyepiece removed)

The eyepiece is part of the prism.. I think it cannot be removed, and looking inside the eyepiece I see another glass surface (with the dust) that can be the pentaprism itself, but I find no way to access it.

You got it! :D that is what I meant.. there is an air gap also in the F3 HP prism and there is dust inside

I'm pretty sure that the F3 eyepiece is screwed on. People often lose them as they become unscrewed, and they can be replaced with diopter lenses to accommodate different eyesight.

Eyepiece removed :)
But the dust still sits after an air-gap, look at the picture (nu dust visible, just to show you the prism without eyepiece)

I think I love that dust...

I think I love that dust...

Ok.. I found a downloadable manual for the F3AF finder that I believe is somehow near to the HP (also if probably more complex..)

Something tells me to leave it alone :D

Wow, it's like a fricken jigsaw puzzle. I guess the choice is "do I live with dust" vs "do I destroy the camera" :)
