Nikon F5 Lust

Actually, I have a question- with your Custom Functions set as I describe above, has anyone noticed that the F5 still hunts for focus as long as the AF-On button is held? Even when it is set to 'Single Focus'

Edit: By hunts, I mean that sometimes it will jump from something you focused on in the foreground to something just slightly behind it- like focusing on a bee, and the camera switches focus to the flower a second later... Caused by the focus point covering both, perhaps? No problem with easier situations likes cars, faces, etc.

It shouldn't do that in Single Focus mode. Hmmmm.

The original EC-B screen focus points do "Light Up" the other screens do not...
You can lock the focus point...
On the bottom back where the Serial number is located flip the door down...press the "L" button while toggling the selector switch on the back of the film door and you'll see the "Lock" light up on the top screen...
You can also lock the Shutter Speed and Aperture with the "L" button...Try it...

wow, thanks for the heads up. I always knew that I could lock exposure, never knew i could use the same button to lock focus. Now that i can lock the focus point, it's not so bad that focus points can't light up with my screen. I'm a happy camper. thanks.

when you say light up that's a bit misleading. With the standard screen they only go darker and thicker 'black'. It's the one thing I wish was like my D700 which lights up the focus point 'red'. The focus points on the F5 are still hard to see in dim light.
 
I think only the F100 and the N80/F80 had that red lighting going on in the viewfinder (very useful under low light), just like the D700 does. The F5 is a tough, macho camera, so you have to figure out the sensors getting activated (that is, darkened).

That, or follow the indicators right above or to the right side of the viewfinder. 🙂

BTW, I had to wait for a loooooooooooong time before laying my paws on an E-CB focusing screen for the F5 (with framelines). There is one, easy to find, that does NOT have the electronic contacts that "emphasize" the focusing sensors, but there is another that does have them. They are difficult to find, but I managed to get one. It took months of scouring eBay, different stores (B&H, KEH, Adorama and the lot) and sites like this one and Photo.net. I think I found one finally from someone selling stuff in P.net.

The F5 is a glorious camera.... Just as glorious as the Leica M5. 😉

Yeah, you're right but it was late and I was getting a bit lazy and just went with the terminology that the poster used...
I didn't know that on other Nikons the brackets actually light up...neat...

Francisco...I have the EC-B screen that came with my F5...it's sitting in a box...I first replaced it with the "E" screen but last year bought a "J" screen and I really like that one...
 
Has no one ever made an after market screen that does light up red? It's not a big issue with the camera anyway as the focus is so fast even in dim light.
 
The F5 is indeed an awesome machine.

Pardon the shameless plug, but if anyone still has F5 lust, my F5 and 50mm/1.4 AF-D lens are up for sale in the classifieds here if anyone is interested. I'm in the U.K.

well I don't think it's a good idea to sell a pretty good F5,
you won't the money what she's worth,
and in a couple of years you won't find a good one.

I'm happy to own one, not really for permanent use, but sometimes I use her beside a Canon 1Vhs and Leica R7,
I hope I'll always have enough batteries to power her up

I bought an F6 in November, at the time thinking my F5 was soon going to be making its way to the classifieds or ebay. But something inside just won't let me put the old girl away, it's such a perfect machine (even though it looks like sh** and is pretty much held together with gaffers tape). I used it again a couple of weeks ago and was blown away by what it's capable of:
