Nikon FM3a Viewfinder Magnifier?

I recently purchased a Nikon FM3a but I am having trouble seeing the prism/split screen clearly enough (to focus properly) through the viewfinder?

I use glasses for reading but I dislike wearing them when I am using a camera.

Does anyone know of a ( + - adjustable) magnifier that can be screwed into the viewfinder eyepiece that can be purchased in the UK?

Any of the diopters available for the Voigtlander Bessa series (Bessa R2A, R3A, etc) and the Carl Zeiss Ikon rangefinder will fit the Nikon FM3a. Even Nikon's own diopters are readily available. I'm not in the UK but would be very surprised if you had trouble finding any of these diopters available.

I am in the same situation, plus I also have an FG-20 also. that needs the same device. I have tried "the auction site that must not be named" in vain. Can anyone suggest a source for these eyepiece diopters?

Us old f**rts are being forced into AF and digital before our time!

Well, like I said, I'm not in the UK, check the listings at B&H so you can at least get product numbers to aid your quest.

All the Zeiss diopters will fit the FM3a. I have a Zeiss Ikon and an FM3a and I can confirm that the diopters are interchangeable. For the Nikon diopters, get the ones that will fit the Nikon F series, e.g., FA, FE, FM2, FM3a.

As to the power of the diopter, that is something you'll have to figure out on your own. 😉

Addendum: The Head Bartender (CameraQuest) sells the Voigtlander diopters, which will fit the FM3a.

The easiest way for you to determine which diopter strength you need to compensate for your vision would be to go to a shop that has a selection of them. Just try them till you find one that works. There are no adjustable diopters from Nikon. The DG-2 is an option as it has an adjustable diopter built in but you don't see the whole screen IIRC when using it because it magnifies.

Are you looking for a diopter or magnifier or combination?

A diopter works like your prescription glasses, adjusted plus or minus to compensate for nearsightedness/farsightedness. It retains the entire angle of view. A magnifier increases the size of what you see, much like reading glasses. However, unlike reading glasses, ysince you are looking through a camera's viewfinder, the angle of view is decreased, i.e., you see less through the VF. The Nikon DG-2 does exactly that.

There are combination magnifier/diopters. The Megaperls 1.3x magnifier has a built in diopter, and actually fits on the FM3A (as well as R-D1s). I have one that I don't use anymore, so if you're interested, PM me.

The megaperls magnifiers (which have a built in diopter adjustment that goes from -3 to +2) can be used on some Nikon models with the DK-18 adaptors. The DK-18 is a 22mm to 19mm adaptor, so if the eyepiece for the FM3A is 22mm, this should work.

The answer does appear to be a diopter to correct my vision - I do not want to lose the edges of the viewfinder 'screen size' using a magnifier.

I have located Zeiss and Voigtlander diopters at Robert Whites in the UK.

You could always buy a F3hp. I love mine and its hp viewfinder was the only reason I picked it up instead of a FM2 back in the day.
