Do the Nikon IF lenses 'rack out' when zoomed? I am looking at the 24-85 D IF, and the 24-120 AF-S IF VR.

I know they both don't change length with focus, but what about zooming?

Thanks for any help,

Size change is one of my big two gripes about zooms these days. The wide angle zooms look like an old 80-200 Nikkor once they are done one way or another. Way too big when you compare them to a prime or RF lens.

Thanks Gents!

That's my dilema--a standard zoom that dosen't look like a tele-zoom when zommed out (in). It alters the balance, and feel of the whole rig...I hate that!

Dino--Great site-thank you!

the 24-120 is a bit soft... lack lustre performer to say the least.

a prime or two and an 80-200 f2.8... you're in business.
This was true of the older 24-120. The 24-120VR is a decent lens. Here's a shot done with it!

To tell the truth, my experience with that lens wasn't that good. Excellent range but the pictures taken with this optic never impressed me.

I use the 24-85 quite a bit, and yes, it 'racks out." On the other hand, I can't see that with my eye up to the finder. ;)
The results are very nice; there are some up on my flickr page.
