Nikon LS 2000?

Hi folks,
I've the opportunity to purchase a Nikon LS 2000 scanner for less than 200 US dollars.

My question is this: how does the scanner compare to the Minolta SD IV (my current scanner)?

I've seen the Nikon go for more than a 1000, but is it a much older scanner than the Minolta?

I'm still learning the ins and outs of scanning with vuescan, and i've recently tried scanning slide film. I know I can't get the tonal range of slides with scanning, but will the nikon do "better" with slides?

I have a Nikon LS-2000 which I bought on the big auction site about two years ago for about the same price you are being offered. I can't compare it with the Minolta scanner because I have never had one. However I also have an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner which is far more recent than the Nikon, but does a lesser job on 35mm negatives. Using VueScan for both scanners, the Nikon at 2700 dpi does a better job than the Epson at 4800 dpi. However the Nikon will only scan 35mm, and the Epson will scan negatives/transparencies/prints up to A4 size. I bought it mainly for scanning MF negatives, for which it does a fine job.

One drawback of the Nikon when used with a modern computer is that it only has a SCSI interface, which most new computers do not. I recently upgraded my computer and I am still waiting on the SCSI card I ordered a couple of weeks ago.

The scanner you are looking at is quite old.

The current models are the 5000D and 9000D (35mm only for the former; both 35mm and 120 for the latter). About $1000 and $1800 new, respectively - but 5000D shows up used now and again for around two-thirds the new price.

In addition, you should also be able to find a IV or V for about $400 - and they are USB/Firewire based (as are, obvioulsy, the 5000/9000).
