Here. Since Nikon didn't see fit to tell you how to use it in the owners' manual. With some creativity, you'll figure out how to adapt these directions to badly curled old film. Or buy a glass carrier.

One other note - the Radio Shack fluid described in the tutorial has trichloroethane in it. So if you can still find it, don't breathe too much of it. But as noted in the attached link, you should be able to use anything that would be suitable for cleaning tape deck capstans or reducing rubber belt slippage.

I still find that this standard carrier with the rubber strips removed and a single piece of (FocalPoint) AN glass on top improves it by a mile for very few $$$. With the rubber strips removed and the "big" screw on the side tightened to stop movement at the correct width for the glass, even the standard clamps can be used to secure film and glass.

I have used that trick of a single glass for some time, but then I gave up, as critical sharpness was not there. I bought the glass, non rotating carrier, and the results are great. I will try the rubber cleaning strategy for curiosity, as this way a lot of dust specks could be avoided. Thanks for the tip Dante.

Yeah - when I got the scanner it had virtually no use, but the rubber was a bit slippery. I figured that it had to have some kind of friction purpose.
