Nikon ordered to pay damages to photographer

The judgment was 'only' $9K. Interesting that Nikon is said to consider appealing it and further the bad press they are receiving than just cutting the cheque and making it go away.

You have to consider their response within the context of their culture. They only had 3 options:

1) If they agreed to pay outright, they lose face.

2) If they outright say NO, it would be considered impolite.

3) “will carefully consider whether to appeal the ruling to the high court,” is the only appropriate response for them.

Yeah, the have to appeal the decision, but the key is how hard. My guess is it will not be a full court press so that both sides can walk away with their heads held up.

Rather sad decision to cancel in the first place. Only way we can be sure not to repeat the past is to accept our mistakes and remember them.

That is a good decision and confirms my faith in Japanese democracy. I am glad the courts have not succumbed to political pressure. Japanese courts do not hand out huge awards like Americans so the verdict is significant regardless of the damages. At the same time I am sure Nikon wanted to exhibit the photos but got pressure from right wingers which are very powerful within the government and the underworld.

As most of you will be aware it is difficult to overstate either how sensitive this issue remains between the two countries or how politically charged it is.
