  • Image data files created with digital cameras (including medium- and large-format cameras). Images that have been retouched using software or by other means will be accepted. Both color and monochrome images will be accepted. (Scans of photographs taken with film cameras are not eligible.)"

I guess I have to shoot my negatives or prints with the d700?!!
Edited; Nor with Nikon Scans!! C'mon!

Maybe they're after EXIF data and are afraid that if they let film in, the pics wouldn't necessarily be taken with Nikons. Or maybe they're just carrying on with that ghastly I AM campaign: I AM arrogant and not very bright.

Cheers,

R.

All that data can be tweaked. If you feel justified, there is a way.

They are really asking for it....

Do they forgot that they still build and sell the F6? (ok not more than 30 a year, but still....)

NOT Bright definitely.
Thank you Roger, that summ's it up!

They are trying to show how far digital has come and it has come a long way. D3200 makes pretty darn nice images for $700. More more money you can buy pro build ones like the D4 and a nice high rez one like the D800.

My Leica M9 is a fabulous tool. I just had some 11x14 prints made on a laser printer that are noise /grain free and simply full of fine detail. They are way better than anything I could get with a V35 and film, same lenses. The only sharpening was amount 25 and default detail in ACR. No noise reduction.

You do need a really good lab though. I use AiProLab.com which is the only place I ever found that could print as well as I can.

I think the main reason is: If the winner is made with a film camera, that´s very bad for marketing ... Here in Finland, if you apply for a Nikon Pro Services, they don`t accept film bodies. haha, that`s why I am a leica guy. In photokina "Das weisentliche night" the guys carrying M4-6-MP etc were treated as "Afficinados" first chance to handle M-M and M-E
The "M"s were not working prototypes. There is a truth about marketing and respect here...

Gear based contests, are these ones you want to enter? Well, car races also are restricted by technical constraints and/or makes allowed, but this is even more boring than gear based photography.

Hah.

I agree about the marketing driving it in all likelihood. It sounds like the kind of rule that a marketing committee would come up with.

Happily, if you go to a branch office like the Repair center / Showroom in Osaka, they seem inclined to help you repair anything with the company name on it. I only have a Nikon scanner but if I every buy a digital SLR again, they will have my money.

It's ironic that Leica doesn't try to maintain a similar long-term relationship with their base; not supporting the screen on the M8 any longer is a foolish move for a boutique company trying to keep in the game.

Not defending Leica, but to me it seems they haven't grown electronic muscles like canikons. It takes time and large customer base to grow experience to choose suppliers and parts with a longevity in mind. Probably they just chose wrong screen - good value in short term, bad for long time support (which is harder with electronic parts when same company isn't manufacturing them).

You may well be right. My only point is that while Nikon's level of support is one more reason to join their flock, for a boutique brand, 1:1 care and long term support would seem to be a must.

People aren't rational beings otherwise they wouldn't choose Leica and Sigma products (thus, also support). I'm listing Sigma here as they also are esotheric mafucturer just like Leica, contrary to some utilitarian makes.

(Scans of photographs taken with film cameras are not eligible.)

I see two options:
1. Let's pretend we held a heated philosophical debate about "what is a photograph" and determine that they were referring to prints, not the negative (film).
2. Let's interpret that rule literally. My camera does not take scans of photographs.

#2 may well be a philosophical debate for some here.
