Nikon RF Photo Challenge

Since reading that this forum (RFF) wants to be more image-focused, I have an idea...a photo challenge strictly using the Nikon RF's....

Although I no longer teach at the university, I am still interested in researching topics of interest. My latest is (will be) the S3 2000 Nikon RF that wil be in my hands by Christmas! My research involves incorporating emotion into my photographs...not just artsy stuff...I mean real emotion. After listening to my latest Bob Dylan CD acquisitions, I got to thinking how to best shoot images that conveyed the same kind of emotions...

So, here is the challenge:

Post images that incorporate emotions using only the Nikon RF's.


Anyone like to join in this adventure?🙂

Would you be OK softening the requirements, to allow photos shot with Nikkor RF lenses ?

SURE!! After all, it is part of the Nikon RF system and totally relevant...in fact, someone may say the photo is more dependent on the lens!

I am really looking forward to learning from you folks, so please post what you like.

I don't know how you can say this will be "image focused", since one of the requirements is that it be shot with a certain kind of camera, the type being undiscernable from the final image! 😕

BTW, Seems like BW is better to show emotions...at least so far...🙄

Jarle, I like the way the 1.4 Nikkor renders the background and isolates the subject...can't wait to use my own!

A classic camera suits better for the silent mood of a coffee-break inside 80-years-old market hall:


Shot few days ago with Nikon S2 & Mill. Nikkor-S 50/1.4 @ f/2. Tri-X 400TX rated 400ASA
and 'souped' in D-76.

Imagine if I had entered this spot with Nikon D3 (which I don't own and maybe never will)
and big zoom, or bulky and noisy F3+MD-4. They have noticed me instantly...
At least the noise of MD-4 might have scared them away... ;-)

I couldn't disagree with you more. I've been shooting for 30 years, with motorized Nikon manual focus SLR's and have never had any problems taking candid street photos using them. I've had an S3 for about one year and while I find it quite easy to pre-meter, and set hyperfocus, and then shoot without looking through the viewfinder using the CV 21, I can and do achieve exactly the same thing with any of my SLRs equipped with a similarly wide lens. And I've never scared anyone away while doing it.
Frankly, I've always considered the "rangefinders are so much quieter, less obtrusive and therefore better than SLR's for photojournalism and street shooting" story to be just another photographic urban myth, probably started and purpetrated by the rangefinder division of the Leica Corporation.

Thanks for comment. You're maybe right about candid street shots and motor drives. Anyway, inside a rather quiet market hall, my MD-4 motors sound may have been a bit noisy. But seriously speaking, it would have not scared anyone away. 🙂 I have noticed that modern motor drives are more silent than those from early 1980's.

Since 1977 when I began shooting, I've used a motorized FE, FE-2, and currently use three motorized cameras: F, F2, and FA, so when I shoot, there is no question that people can hear the drives. And still it's no problem to do street candids with them.

Ok, to get back on topic here's a shot taken with the Nikkor Mill. 50/1.4.
Kyomi-chan was very excited about trying out dad's big camera, so I'll say the emotion for this one is "excitement".
