Keith, it works well for me, with the shutter release where it is. The focus throw on a Nikon is long, so rotating the lens is just a bit faster than using the focus wheel. I also like using it since the focus throw is in the opposite different direction than on an M body. My brain cramps less.
I bet Che used the thumb wheel.....

The best camera is one that still works!

I can see your point but I just figure if my left hand is already gripping and supporting the camera then it may as well be doing something useful!

I only use the thumbwheel for 50's. I usually try to "prefocus" a bit by turning the barrel of the lens and use the thumbwheel to "fine tune" focus. Biggest problem is if you are going from a near focus to infinity - then I find it easier to hold the lens and kind of twist the camera!
Any external mount lens focussed by tuning the barrel. The exception being the 25/4 with its rather weird focus - external mount and thumbwheel focus as the focussing is "inside" the lens. Less complex than it sounds though.
My biggest problem is going from M-camera focus to Nikon. i do spend a bit of time swearing at the backwards turn of the Nikon (compared to the M's which has the advantage me having used them for almost 50 years).

I got one! Now I am looking forward to using and contrasting it with the Contax and Kiev. Glad to hear that the J12 fits it as I really enjoy using this lens..wish it fitted the C IIIa!

I am interested in an S2 as well, to be used primarily for street shooting.
How loud is the shutter? Is it fairly stealthy?

welcome to the forum.
the S2 shutter is louder than than an M Leica shutter and both are louder than a Yashica GSN shutter.
the S2 is stealthy, thats what the S stands for
an excellent street shooter and an alternative to the M3 for a 1:1 (ok ,the M3 has a.91x finder) VF if Zorki 4 or even CV quality is not your cup of tea.
a SBOOI finder on a Barnack Canon works just as well IMHO.

To me the S2 has about the same volume and slap as an early Barnack Leica. Not quiet like an M but certainly not loud or intrusive.

The S2 is a bit noisier than the S3/S4?SP - but by no means intrusive. It has a different shutter mechanism than the later cameras. Your biggest problem for you is going to be people asking you"Oh, a Nikon - is it digital"? More people comment on Nikon's than on Leica's!

If you happen to have a Nikon F to test with, lock up the mirror and you get about the same sound level as an S2/SP/S3.
I forced my son to use my old Nikkormat FTn. He got lots of comments about it being a film camera. He want my S3 but no way!

Thanks for your thoughts on the shutter noise. I am currently (trying) to use a M8 for street photo's, and the shutter noise is about as subtle as a brick through a window...
I have a plastic camera that says "Niknon S2 Super" on it.
It works pretty good, you don't even have to focus. The guy that sold it to me says it was better than a Nikon.
