Page 19 on the manual sums it up better than any of us could explain. I'm guessing the camera has seen little use, and therefore I doubt you'll see scratches on the rear (lens always on there). You are probably looking at the aperture blades. You can see the shutter curtains when you take off the back of the camera.

There's a 50mm lens on KEH for $286 that is in excellent condition. Their excellent condition often means something is mint or close to. $1200 seems high unless you have the boxes, papers, case, and stuff.
