I already adjusted the rangefinder on my S2 with some help found from this forum. But i need to clean the rangefinder as well. That requires taking the top plate off. Any special hints i should be aware of while doing this ?

Where can i buy a repair manual for the S2 ? It would be more safe to work on it with a manual. I have already tried to buy the manual from a few shops, but no luck so far.

Depending on what parts are dirty, removing the front bezel and taking out the front windows may be good enough. Give it a try.

If you need more, look to Tomosey's book on Nikon Repair.

The Nikon uses two rangefinder prisms. Whatever you do, don't remove the prisms from their mounts.

I haven't worked on an S2. A Nikon S was fairly simple to disassemble and service.

I already did some cleaning when the front bezel (and the front windows) was removed for rangefinder adjustment. Not good enough. It looks like the dirt is on the prism just behind the small rangefinder window.

Tomosy´s book (ISBN 1584280417) covers the S and S3. The information is close enough that it´s usable on S2 as well ?

The rangefinder window comes out easily, as does the VF window. Take the bezel off again; a few screws hold the window frame and glass in. The mask behind the RF wondow also comes off. You should be able to get to the surface of the prism from there. Do not be surprised if it is not dirt, but is desilvering. ALSO: I re-assembled mine without the RF mask. Makes for a bigger RF spot.

Thanks for help again. I cleaned everything i could reach by removing the cover glasses. Not much improvement.

Of course, it might be desilvering, but it doesn´t look like that to me. I might also try that trick to leave out the mask, seems like a good idea.

Anyway, i won´t disassemble the camera more before getting the repair manuals. (I ordered the Tomosy´s book (Amazon) and an original repair manual for S and S2 (camerabooks.com))

OK, now i have the manuals. I am removing the top cover by following the original 1955 service manual. Next i should remove the high-speed shutter dial.

The manual tells me to pull up the dial and loosen the set screw and then turn the high-speed dial CCW to take it off. My question is: after loosening the set screw should i or shouldn´t i pull the dial up while turning it CCW ?? If i pull it up and turn, it seems like nothing really happens, the dial just turns freely endlessly. But if i don´t pull it up it´s so stiff that i´m afraid to turn it since i am not sure ?

Did my explanation make any sense ?
