Nikon S2 Unrepairable?

Hey there! Just got my Nikon s2 back from the shop where they told me they couldn't fix it due to them not being able to find a curtain brake spring for it. Apparently it needs a very specific level of tension and it's just way easier to use the original part. I really want to shoot with this camera but the fact that they couldn't find the part frightens me a little. Anyone got any suggestions?

Try another tech? "Way easier" sounds like either the inability or unwillingness to do necessary replacement and adjustment.

It's a long haul to ship it, but you might try Kanto Camera. They seem to be able to fix *anything*, creating replacement parts if necessary. And as they are located in Japan, there's a chance they may actually have the original in stock, or a parts camera to get it from.

Dan Daniel may be worth a try. He overhauled a Voigtlander Superb for me, which isn't an easy camera to work on. Following is a quote from his web site:

I've used DAG and he is very good, but extremely busy and you might not be pleased with the long wait.

I suggest that procamera, Zacks Camera (they did fix Huss's M5 when nobody else could, even DAG or Sherry, and they advertise fabricating parts), or Camequest might do the trick more quickly. Call first.

I agree with everyone above, DAG is probably your best bet. You might also want to talk to the folks at Authorized Photo Service, they used to be the Nikon Service center in Chicago, they may have the parts and be able to fix it:

Oh yeah, ship it to Kanto. I sent them my Canon VI-T for a CLA a few years back, that also had a broken self timer. Amazingly, in their vast collection of camera parts, they found a new self timer, which they installed (I'm still amazed that Kanto stocks parts for 60+ year old cameras). Plus the CLA was perfect. A satisfied customer.

Kanto is good, but Kiitos Camera Repair is the premier Nikon film camera repairer in Japan. They have parts no one else has - not surprising since most of their staff are ex-Nikon employees and they're located just a few hundred meters down the street from the old (now demolished) Nikon 101 building where a few of them previously worked.
