Nikon S3 loose rewind/advance collar

I have had a read of the Nikon SP manual at this excellent link here:

After having a quick peek I found that on my Millennium S3 the rewind / advance collar is very loose.
On my Millennium SP the collar is perfectly tight without any play whatsoever.
On a vintage, fully overhauled and beautiful condition SP I just received the collar is also perfectly tight, just with the slightest hint that it is not actually fused to the body ;-)

What is the correct procedure to tighten the collar on my S3?

This S3 obviously has not seen much work until now.
I bought it as NOS just a little while ago and it has so far no more than 10 rolls through it.

Dirk, do you mean the A-R ring?

The lock-ring that holds the A-R ring in place probably needs tightening. There's a locking screw in the side of the lock-ring that you can access through a small hole at the back of the A-R ring. Loosen that screw and then you can tighten the lock-ring for the A-R ring.

Yes Jon, thats the one, the A-R ring ;-)
I can see the little hole in the A-R ring - it looks to be accessible when the ring is set to the "R" position.
I will check this out once I get to finish the roll - haven't touched the S3 since the you know what has fallen in my hands 🙂

- set A-R ring to "R"

- tighten lock ring with tiny needle spanner from top (have to make myself a tool for that)
- re-tighten lock screw through little port hole
- finished

This is all true. Be careful not to scratch the lock ring. Make the tool perfectly adjusted and with smooth ends. Grab it tightly and grab the camera tightly too when you tighten the lock ring.

I'll just add that setting the A-R ring to R doesn't necessarily place the access hole to the screw in the right position. On the cameras I've worked on, the correct position to access the screw has usually been with the A-R ring set to a position just shy of the R position. Wherever you can access that screw is the right position.
