My point was that a reader of the post took the $500 quote from Fred seriously. And when it was taken seriously, Fred commented about "where did that number come from". Up until Fred joined the Nikon forum, the members tended to give serious answers and attempted to help members that posted questions. Most of us enjoyed the cameras, and wanted others to do so as well. Since Fred has joined the forum, it has become more a field for him to have fun with us.
That's fine. Fred has no problem speaking his mind. Neither do I. Let me know when that becomes a problem on this forum.

Well-known
Back a few years ago when I wanted to check out Nikon RF cameras I bought an S4 and early SP (one of the first 300 made). Can't say I was impressed by those first cameras, the SP had finder issues and the S4 was a great deal that I sold for a good profit to a happy collector, but it wasn't at the same level as a Leica for me. It also had the 'EP' engraving, which with a Leica extra engravings usually means more to a collector, but the idea of the original Exchange Post purchase seemed more like from a discount store - interestingly at least this S4 was available to Japan based oversea military but not imported directly to the USA.
Now that I have a couple Nikon RF cameras my thinking is a bit different. The S4/S2/S3 here in Japan are all about the same value with the S2 being older but valued as a more 'classic' camera (especially the black dial version), they can be cheaper if really used, the original S3 prices getting hit with the new reissued S3, and the S4 although basically an S3 with the single non-rotating speed dial and improved shutter and in used condition is going for a bit less than the S3.
I like the finders of the S2 and SP the best (no flare and easier to see rangefinder patch), but as a user camera the S4 if found at a good price (saw one for under $1,000 not long ago) would be 'as good' as an S3 I think. Is anyone really paying $2,000 to collect an S4 these days?

killer of threads
I just wish that I could change one thing for each of the S models:
Put a non-rotating shutter dial in the S2
Take out the self timer in the S3 (and add parallax compensation)
Lower the price of the SP
Lower the price of the S4
I just wish that the S2 could have a non-rotating shutter dial. If that was the case, I'd pick one up in a heartbeat as an intro to Nikon RFs. As is an S3 is the closest I'll get to an inexpensive Nikon.
An SP would be a fantastic camera, but getting one would ultimately entail the selling of my M2; sorry Kiu, but that just isn't going to happen.

The best camera is one that still works!
Damn ... there was some good spicy interaction going on in this forum a while ago ... I went off to modify my D70s so I could hang around a bit and when I got back the cleaners have removed it all ... now I have this weird hybrid D70 that I don't know what to do with?

yeah, sanitized. Kind of a bummer- the thread disappeared before we even got a chance to vote somebody off the island.
I hope that the situation will return to normal once folks have had an opportunity to chill.

That was a funny thread ... and kind of clever!

Or pay $850 or more for one that has a dud shutter, though it comes with the original box and an everyready case.
