Nikon scanners and Windows Vista 64-bit

Unfortunately it's about time to buy a new PC (could I please go to the dentist and get a few fillings instead). I've concluded that all of the software I use is Vista compatible, so I think I'm going that route. All my software and hardware is 64-bit compatible as well, with the exception of Nikon Scan.

Presently I use Vuescan with a 5000 ED. I believe Vuescan doesn't actually have its own driver for the 5000 ED. You are required to install Nikon Scan which contains the driver that is then used by Vuescan.

So my question is this: Is anyone using a Nikon scanner on a Windows Vista 64-bit machine? If so, how?

Very late reaction, but I got my Nikon V ED working under Vista 64 bit by installing Vuescan. Not so happy with my Tri-x scans, but that is a completely different story...

Yes, a good friend of mine is using his Coolscan V with Vuescan and Vista 64!

Nikon's support site (which is marginally better than Canon's), at least the USA version, is difficult to navigate even when you know exactly what you want.

That said, I believe you can find a Vista-relevant Nikonscan update.

I use Vuescan on rare occasions now, ever since the flop of trying to use it with the Coolscan 9000 (it is very very slow with the 9000 scanner; if there's been --or somebody's found-- a fix, please let me know)

Wow, a delayed response. As it turns out, I'm running my Coolscan 5000 under Vista 64 using Vuescan. Works just fine.

Wow, so rare occasion of perfect timing....
I'm just on the crossroads of putting up a new PC system to replace my aging one (about 7-8 years old).
Figured up all the hardrware, now trying to make up my mind for an x64 OS...
Aside of phtoographic use (Photoshop), I intend to put the system to a good load of engineering computing, hence a strong system is needed along with large memory which now raises the question of a proper OS to support 4GB and larger RAM. Spend a vast amount of hours surfing through iten reading la wide spread of opinions on XP 64 against Vista x64 and yet can't come up with the solution...
I figure most certainly most of the engineering software should run OK under XP x64 as well as a common freeware in use and hoping Photoshop will do as well.
However, NikonScan is still my headache. Couldn't find references whether it runs fine under XP x64/Vista x64 or not....I'm so used to noe with my aging Coolscan IV ED, would hate to be forced to look for another software/Vuescan (tried the latter in some past - couldn't force myself to like one)...

In any case, I'll have two separate HDDs and one of them will have a regular XP OS (along with Linux) so will have the XP as a backup should any improtant software refuse to run under x64 OS, but I really hope to be able to fetch out the best of 64-bit system....

Can anyone confirm NikonScan running under either XP x64 or Vista x64 ?

I am a Nikon Scan 4 addict. I am simply not used to the user interface of Vuescan. But I am glad to find one thing: the Vuescan driver works for Nikon Scan 4!!! That is, install Vuescan first, the system will recognize 5000ed because the driver is installed (under Vista 64). After that, install Nikon Scan 4, but uncheck the drivers for 5000ed during installation (they only work under 32-bit). When things are done, reboot (not necessary but better), and open Nikon Scan 4. Bingo! You can work with 5000ed and Nikon Scan again under Vista 64!!!

I can't figure out why Nikon is unable to provide a 64-bit driver while Vuescan can. Shame on Nikon support!!! 😡

I had the same problem and contacted Nikon support. They told me that they currently have no plans in developing a driver for Vista 64-bit (there is only a driver for 32-bit). They even wrote that they "hoped to have helped me with that information..." :bang:

Luckily I found this thread. The Vuescan driver works indeed with the LS-5000ED and also Nikon Scan 4.03 works just fine now.

I cannot believe that Nikon does not want or is not capable of developing a driver for Vista 64bit. It just doesn`t make sense.

Finally I can start using the scanner again - I almost lost hope already.

How is Vista better for pr0n and warez than XP? I haven't noticed myself fapping any more efficiently since switching to Vista64 ~1.5 yrs ago ;-)

A way of getting Scan 4 to work under Vista 64

Vista 64 normally requires drivers to be "signed". Thus, the unsigned driver included in Scan4.0.3 will not, by default, be installed in a Vista 64 system. I cannot recall if the installation "failure" mentions any reason. I used Procmon trace to find what was happening during the scan4 install. Since Vista 32 does not impose this restriction (nor others), scan 4.0.3 does work in Vista32.

The requirement for signed drivers can be circumvented by setting a boot option. One easy way to do this is via the free "EasyBCD" utility. Caution is advised! If you go this route, install and invoke the utility. Select "Advanced Options", turn on "Allow unsigned driver instalation on Vista 64-Bit Edition", Click to "Apply Settings", re-boot.

Next reinstall Scan 4.0.3 (so the driver will be installed). On my system, this then greyed out the "Open Twain Source" option. Thus, you may no longer have access to the "VueScan Twain" mode (if you had installed Vuescan).

You now should have access to all of the Nikon scanner's options. I much prefer having access to all of my Coolscan V's options as compared to Vuescan's limited, albeit simple options.

You should then use EasyBCD and disable the allowance of non-signed drivers.

Just as Nikon ignores users of its older technology - so does Canon. Canon is only releasing a 32 bit version of the driver for the 20D. This means a 64bit vista laptop cannot shoot tethered, or otherwise control the camera directly.

I'm wondering if the same approach as outlined above (using EasyBCD to override driver signing) might work to install the 32 bit Canon 20D driver on Vista 64.

Anyone know a reason it should or should not work?

I've got a smoothly running Vista 64 system, so I'm hesitant to install ANYTHING related to the OS (such as EasyBCD) but to get my Coolscan III AND my 20D back on line, it just might be worth the risk!
