Well, I've owned an FM3a. Great camera but neither the viewfinder nor the shutter release feel could come even close to competing with my F or F2.

And stay away from the F2. It'll only make you regret choosing the F first.

The 55 1.2 S looks as well as rendering of backgrounds are just delicious. And so too the rendering with the 105 2.5 P sonnar. Definitely F-mount lenses to pine for.

The 10.5 F4 T needs some light to go with it and the lens leaves some interesting character in the background. Its narrow barrel is quite unique, looks lopsidedly small on a larger SLR like the F4 or F5. Looks more balanced on the FM3a that some of you folks have.

My Nikon SLR wish list is a short one.

Nikon F2AS in chrome and a FM3a in chrome.

Why because I've got a pretty extensive Nikon collection already and these are the "missing" cameras.

Not sure. I actually prefer a little bit of that wonderfully subtle brassing that screw Leicas and old Nikons get.

Now you have tried the F treat yourself to an F6, wonder in amazement how much easier it is to manually focus than any Nikon before it and not worry about weather when taking it up Everest and keep the Fm2 in your backpack for when everyone tells you it needs batteries!

The ultimate in robustness and reliability is the F. Why not use it? In my view you'd be crazy to use anything inferior, such as the FM2, which is a jumped-up Nikkormat

I've just checked both my black Fs and there's a foam mirror stop but it's in perfect condition on both of them, i.e. it hasn't dissolved into nasty crumbly dust. Light sealing is done properly, i.e. precision engineered labyrinthine: no foam. Or if there is, I've never noticed it, and I got my first F (which I still have) second hand around 40 years ago.

I used to feel the same about the Fm2 but am now thankful for the greater flexibility of the higher shutter speeds. The F is uncomfortable in the hand, heavy, noisy and that removable back? seriously F lovers, move on, leave them in the collector cabinet

Dear John,

Seriously, F lovers, use them! Ignore people who think that (later, inferior, less reliable, less versatile) cameras are better.

Alternatively, use jumped-up Nikkormats. While you are at it, drink smoothies instead of eating fruit and vegetables.

The F still suffers from a badly-placed shutter release button, and requires three hands (or strong teeth) to change the film. The F2 is God's camera.

The FM3a is not bad for an expensive jumped-up Nikkormat, but the finder is a poky affair and the shutter release feels agricultural compared to the F2's.

Bottom line? Buy an F3. 😛
