I got to wondering, what Nikkor AF lens has the shortest barrel? I know about the 45mm P lens, but it's not AF, even tho it has a microprocessor. What is the tiniest AF-Nikkor?

In F mount, probably the 50mm f1.8
Yes, I believe it is the 50/1.8 AFD that's the shortest.

There are other remarkably short F-mount AF lenses though, for instance the 20/2.8 AF which is only a hair longer when sat side-by side to the 50. I'm measuring a difference of between 4 to 5 mm. Its body is much wider though..

The original AF-Nikkor 28/2.8?

This was a 5-element design, very thin manual focus ring.

OKAY: Now I peeked at the chart. The original Af-Nikkor 28/2.8 is the same 39mm length as the AF-Nikkor 50/1.8. Both are based on the Series E optics.

Well, since the OP didn't specify Nikon F mount AF lenses, just Nikon AF lenses, it would have to be the 10mm f2.8 Nikon 1 mount AF lens.

Best,
-Tim

Does the Z mount count? If so, it might be the new Z 28/2.8.

I was thinking of the F mount when I started this. The idea that there are now other Nikon mounts is still new to me! There is more to be aware of, now, than there once was . . .
