A lot of you know that I have been posting about the performance of adapted lenses on the Nikon Z8. This afternoon I tried something a little different. Back in my M8 days, I had a Leica 35 Summaron/f:3.5, which I was using with a with a B&W 39mm 093 IR pass filter that took advantage of the M8's oddly sensitive behavior as far as IR was concerned. It was a bug that could be turned into a feature, if you know what I mean.

Well, it turns out that other cameras have at least some IR response. The M9 does and it turns out that the Z8 does too, although it is uneven across the frame. So today, I slapped the Summaron on there and had a go. Here's what the Summaron looks like when used without the filter as a plain ol' lens:

Shot at f: 4, I think. You can see a little fall-off at the corners, which I didn't bother to correct for this shot. Nice color rendition, I think for a lens of this age.

Here's the look with the IR pass filter on.

Not to apologize, but of course the filter is blocking a large percentage of the light hitting the sensor, so exposures handheld are in the 1, 1-5 second range. A tripod would be the way to really get some results, but handheld with the Nikon's IBIS, I think you can get a sense of what the combo does.

I more or less scale focused with the lens. I tried using the camera's focus magnification feature, but there wasn't enough contrast in the viewfinder to do much with that. So point and guess?
