Nikon's non-micro-4/3s ILS

I think they've waited too long, and although they've finally decided to bring a product to market, I think it's a mistake to not try and take on the m4/3s ecosystem. They're making a niche for themselves where there's going to be no market.

It took them so long to do something, I was expecting it to be really polished and thoughtfully-executed. That remains to be seen, but as of right now, it really doesn't seem either of the two... They should've take a full-frame sensor and built a tiny mirrorless body around it.

It looks like they're still aiming for the P&S crowd. Simple (read: amateur) controls, and elegant (read: plain) styling. Looks boring. I was really hoping for an enthusiast RF style camera. Big sensor, good lens compatibility, optical viewfinder, manual controls on the top (bury auto modes in menus if they absolutely have to be included to satisfy the company execs)...

Now Canon has the chance to punish them for their mistake.

I agree its up to Canon now, Nikon fumbled it as did Pentax with the keyring camera , up to now its Sony for me (only 1 .5x magnification ) I wish testers in Mags would score them on compatability with other lens mounts!!

I think Nikon has "lost the plot" on this one. As much as I like Nikon gear they offer me nothing I want as an smaller alternative to their excellent DSLRs and lenses. I think I will see what the Sony NEX 7 has to offer.

Haha, I just ordered my Nikon J1. Silent (electronic shutter), super fast AF and buffer, small, and very sexy, image quality beats m43 too.

This will be a perfect camera for street photography.

Yes, strangely enough - despite the condemnations and criticisms from folks who have never held one, the new Nikons seem to be selling quite well in Japan and maybe even Europe. Even stranger, folks who ignored said condemnations and criticisms seem to be putting some good work up on flickr....

Life has prevented me from shooting it as much as I would like, but the V1 and lenses I bought continue to impress me.

Rumor is that these systems have been selling well... but I have not seen one in use anywhere... and I see a lot of cameras in NYC.

I've seen the J1 several times already, mostly in Central Europe. It seems to be a popular travel camera. Never seen (or recognized) the V1 outside a shop, though.

Probably the most frustrating camera I've used - the V1. On that note, my annoyances can probably be easily fixed via firmware.
2 major deal breakers for me:
1. The well documented constant preview - there's no way to turn it off.
2. Can't keep the trigger pressed 1/2 way (to lock focus point) & just fire away (can only do 1 shot from a 1/2 press) - perhaps a little too nitpicky?

If it weren't for the above, I would've kept the camera. Loved everything else about it ie: size, weight, handling, integrated EVF, speed, quiet buttery shutter.
