NikonScan Mac Help LS-50 / 10.5

I just bought a Coolscan V and I'd like to get Nikonscan 4 working. I upgraded immediately to 4.0.2 and when I tried to scan for the first time I could only get the toolbar to come up in Nikonscan. It says that it can't find the scanner. I can get it to work with both Vuescan and Silverfast (the demos) but I find these programs inferior to the Nikon software.

What am I doing wrong here?

Oh and I also can't get it to launch through Photoshop CS3.

I'm using a G5 tower and 10.5 with 3 gigs of ram.
 
Is it connected thru firewire or USB? Many USB scanners / printers don't work if they're connected through a hub.

Additionally, one of the best ways to test a problem is to create a new user account on your computer. Create the account, and log into it (make sure no other users are logged in,) then attempt to re-create the issue.
 
according to my system profiler the LS-50 is detected, so it's just Nikon Scan 4 that isn't seeing it. I'll try the restart with the scanner on, and the new user.

Ugh, I wish Nikon supported their scanners more.
 
No luck on either!!! Crap! :-(

The only problems I can find on google are people just reporting the software not working at all, not the software working, but just not detecting the scanner.

Oh, and it's plugged directly into one of the rear USB ports on my mac. Like I said, I was able to scan with both silverfast and vuescan, but those programs just aren't very good.
 
Did you install the original version first? I am pretty sure you need to install 4.0 and then upgrade to 4.0.2. I think 4.0.2 is an updater, not a full version.

The other option is to do the opposite of what you did when you installed Nikonscan before. If the scanner was off when you installed the driver, reinstall with the scanner on. Plugged in, unplugged.

If you have another TWAIN device on while trying to find the Nikon, that may interfere. I can't run my flatbed scanner at the same time that I run my Nikon scanner. Because of that, I would also try not to have any other programs operating while the install takes place. Shut off TimeMachine, etc.

Nikonscan has worked in 10.5 and 10.6 for me, but given the number of problems people have with that software, I would guess that the program has a very finicky installer. A clean uninstall and reinstall might get all of the package installed correctly.
 
I have similar problem when using Nikonscan on my i-mac and I have an external hardisk connected via Firewire. The same system connecting the external hard disk via USB works. The demo of Vuescan works in both ways. I donot remember where but I read Nikon knows the problem but does NOT plan to fix it ! Shame, double shame! probab ly noe enough people complaining to Nikon...

I had similar problem with my Coolscan V Ed when I moved to new iMacs and Powerbook. I emailed Nikon and got the following and Method 1 worked for me.

"Thank you for contacting Nikon Technical Support.

Other users seem to be running the application fine under Mac OS 10.5 and so the program may simply need to be reinstalled.

Two methods but Method 1 should resolve the problem. To un-install NikonScan you will need to put the CD back into the drive.

Method 1

When the install program comes up we want to go to the custom install menu and select just the NikonScan program.

Now click on install.

In the new window there will be a drop-down menu in the upper left - choose un-install from this and then click on the un-install button at the bottom.

When that finishes we can quit out of the install program.

Next Trash the preferences, we want to click on Go - Home.

Now navigate to Library - Preferences and delete any Nikon Scan files/folders located there.

Next empty your trash and restart your Mac.

Now please reinstall the software and after a reboot try it again and see if that works.


Method 2

If it does not please uninstall it once again following the same steps and then try creating a new Admin account and installing the software into the new account.

Click on the Apple Menu

Click on System Preferences

Click on the Accounts

Right below Login Options you should see a + and -

To create a new account click on the + sign.

Then fill in all the information, including assigning a picture and ensuring it has full Admin rights.

Once everything is filled out click on one of the existing accounts, this well save the account you just created.

Now we want to log out of your current account and into the new account.

Install the software and give it a shot."

Thanks for info MPerson, just a question: which version of OS do you work with? Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard ?
I'm planning an upgrade and have some doubts...

All three on various machines hook up to my V Ed OK.

Another tip:

After upgrading to version 4.0.2 the software version number will still be displayed as 4.0.0, however the correct version can be confirmed in the "Read Me" file which is located in the Nikon Scan 4 folder on the computer’s hard disk.
 
Well I tried both methods but Nikon Scan still fails to recognize the scanner! Silverfast, continues to work with it. But I'd rather not drop 50 dollars on this program I rather hate using, when the program I like using is just being finicky!

This is getting frustrating. :-(
 
I have used NikonScan with my iMac long enough. It crashes several times a day. VueScan works flawlessly. I run my scans through icorrecteditlabproapp6.0.1 before final finishing in Aperture. Glad to not be using the NikonScan software. Nikon should upgrade their software to work with Snow Leopard.

See the recent posts under "New NikonScan software coming." First thing to do is to reset the PRAM; that solved a similar problem for me.

CS3 will not let you import into PS, as previous versions allowed. With CS3 you have to create the tif file in NS, close it, then open it in PS.
