Nimbin ... a town that changed.

A week or so ago I travelled to the northern New South Wales town of Nimbin. It was an innocent sleepy little country haven until the Aquarius Festival in 1973 ... this was basically Australia's equivalent of Woodstock. Many visitors remained after the festival and live to this day in and around Nimbin and it is now known for its hippy based lifestyle and a dominant drug culture that is largely ignored by the authorities aside from the occasional token bust to keep the bean counters in head office happy. (Cannabis is the main drug of trade although harder drugs are now becoming quite a problem)

Snapshots from the few hours I spent there on a very hot Monday (30deg+) ... taken with my Nikon F6 and Rollei Retro 100. The people in the photographs are made up of locals, tourists and the ever-present backpackers from all around the world, who come to this bohemian little town to experience its unusual offerings.

I'm actually quite keen to return and continue taking more photos and try and get an understanding of how this place functions and exists in such a conservative place as Australia! There is nothing like it anywhere else in this country!

Nice shots Keith. I'll have to make a point of visiting some day. Your photos remind me a little of Port Douglas, north of Cairns. Similar very relaxed tropical feel, but with lots more $$. When we visited there several years ago my wife and I walked the main street. At one point I turned to her and told her she was the only woman in the street wearing a bra!

Bellingen, up the NSW North Coast has a similar ambience with a lot of counter-culture people congregated around the area. There's an annual Bellingen Music Festival (Global Carnival) that provides good opportunities for photography. It's usually held on the October long weekend (NSW holiday).

Hey Keith, this is my favorite set/project that I've seen you post. I would love for you to return and continue with it!

Fantastic set.... Love the whole lot
Superb Contrast & Crisp Sharpness

A great Place for Summer Fun & I suppose this Time of Year adds to Nimbin's Charm....

You have nailed it with these shots Keith. Oz is a very conservative country but there are pockets like this that are good to know still exist. Thanks.

Keith, Images that allow me to get a feel for the place.
Make me want to visit.

Lovely Photo Essay with a broad canvas of themes and people.

The narrative adds that much more.

Thank you for sharing.
