So I thought the big rumor held that Nikon would announce their digital RF with three M-mount DX lenses at PMA this week.

Personally, I'm kinda disappointed. I was looking forward to the noise performance of the D3/D700 sensor in an RF package.

I thought Nikon was going to announce a digital RF last year? Or was that 2008? Or was that 2007?.......

when they do announce something like that, it won't be a drf in the traditional sense. I'd put money down it will be a consumer p&s with interchangeable lenses, a small sensor and an lcd screen.

I expected Samsung to finally annouce the pink flying hippopotamus. I was curious to see how pink it actually was and how high it could fly. Needless to say I'm very disappointed that no such thing came true. Maybe in 2011?

I never heard of any Nikon plans to make a digital RF for M-mount DX lenses, and frankly, this rumour doesn't even make sense. If they would launch a new non-DSLR line, it would feature a dedicated bayonet since Nikon is also in the lens business. I can't imagine that they would not like to capitalize on a newly emerging market.

Rumours about Nikon plans for something like an EVIL camera system have already been going on for a while, and I think Thom Hogan has an interesting comment about Nikon's non-existing camera launch on PMA. Scroll down to the fouth paragraph of Thom's article 'Updates/PMA News'.

Nikon is not going to introduce a digital RF. Unless by 'digital RF' you mean a Coolpix with an optical viewfinder.

I wouldn't think anyone would release a digital rangefinder, like the Epson, M8 and M9, at this point. I would love to see it happen, but I don't think we'll see another pure digital rangefinder released by another company besides Leica / CV / Epson.

didnt expect DRF from Nikon but least something new.. this PMA didnt bring much anything, few lenses and point-n-shoots ??

It'll be here... Any Day Now(TM). ;)

Nikon at least introduced some stuff. Not a peep out of Canon. Where the hell is the 1Ds Mark IV?

Yeah, but that Sigma 85mm f1.4 looks interesting. Wonder how much it'll cost. Don't really care about the 1Ds Mark IV, though. I couldn't afford it anyways and I'm happy with my 5DII.

No digital rangefinder announcement from Nikon at PMA! Dozens worldwide shocked!

Dozens sounds a bit high.

Historically, Nikon has been oblivious to major trade shows when planning the introduction of new equipment. Any rumor that Nikon would introduce anything significant at PMA or Photokina is over 99% likely to be pure balderdash.

I think Thom Hogan's point is extremely likely to be accurate. I also think that no truly new camera will be introduced using any old "dumb" mount (e.g. M-mount with no electronic brain and corresponding data interface). The EVIL market will follow the m43 and NX approach of new mounts with legacy adapters.

One would expect an EVIL system from Nikon to be electrically equivalent of G type AF-s lenses with a short register distance that would allow a wide range of legacy lenses, probably including M-mount, while being highly compatible with existing F-mount AF lenses via an adapter.

I agree with this. It will be something aimed at the mass market, where Nikon can make real money. I'll be surprised if they do something for a niche market.
