Savvis Center rules:

CAMERAS AND VIDEOS
Camera policies vary by event, are determined solely at the discretion of the show and are subject to change without notice. For most concerts, still, digital and video cameras are prohibited. For Blues games, most other sporting events and family shows, still cameras are permitted but digital and video cameras are prohibited. Unauthorized or prohibited photography of an event may result in film or videotape being confiscated by show representatives. In all cases, the resale of photography or video is strictly prohibited. For details regarding the camera policy for a specific event, please call 314-622-5400.

BINOCULARS
Binoculars are permitted for most events at Savvis Center.

PROHIBITED ITEMS
The following items may not be brought into Savvis Center: cans, bottles, coolers, plastic beverage containers, food and beverages, helium balloons, oversized bags or backpacks, pets (other than service animals), laser pointers/pens, artificial noise makers (including air horns), sticks (including those on pennants or flags) or weapons of any sort. All purses and bags are subject to inspection upon entering the arena.

Well, maybe we're not so civilized after all. 😛

I just thought I'd explain for the benefit of those who might want to visit the area, Earl. 😉
Ron's Lounge is a few miles east of O'Fallon in Lebanon. A nice lady named Twyla mentioned Ron's Lounge when we were talking several weeks ago. Actually, I hadn't been in Ron's since the last century. Did you ever see that vintage soda fountain they have in the drug store next to Ron's?

Several months ago I was lucky enough to attend one of the WWE events here in Sydney. It was either RAW or Smackdown, can't remember which but I have been to both. I had my trusty 300D with 2 lenses, one a 50 1.8 and the other the kit supplied 18-55. These may not sound like much but I was only 7 rows from ringside. At one point I had the kit lens on and I stood on the seat to get a shot over the people in fronts heads. When I got down an usher came over and said that 'telescopic lenses were not allowd to be used".

I laughed at him and asked if he knew anything about photography. He said he didn't. So I turned around and continued to use the lens. I mentioned this to my cousin (who I have been educating about photography) and he laughed.

ONe thing that gets me is how people will always insist on using flash even though they are quite a distance away from the action. I bet that in the pre-digital days there were many great shots of the backs of peoples heads taken in stadiums and arenas around the world, and they are still being taken (then deleted) today.

I got back this morning to see what comments had arisen from my questions... I guess I should have remembered my Philosophy 101: Logic & Persuasion class... then I would have correctly read it as (200mm and f/2.8) rather than each condition individually. Given that interpretation, I am fine because my 200mm lens is only f/4.5 and only my 50mm and 28mm are faster than f/2.8. I immediately leaped to the "we're being screwed" interpretation...

I see that someone posted the rules for the Savvis center. It is interesting that they are different from the rules posted by the United States Figure Skating Association on their website where you purchase the tickets. At least the USFSA says you can have still cameras for personal use (http://www.stlouis2006.com/rulesandregulations110105.pdf).

I'm going to assume the USFSA rules and the interpretation above, and take the entire camera bag, although my pictures usually look like crap. There's a reason I usually photograph old buildings, cemetaries, landscapes, etc. and not sports... Thanks for all the advice. We'll see what I come back with this year.

I've got an idea, but you'll need an MF SLR... grab a Pentacon Six with 180/2.8 sonnar... you'll be within acceptable rules and I'm sure the guy who will see the camera is going to faint in front of you... within acceptable limits, with a huge handweapon! 😀

Count me out... That's a tripot lens for me...

Most of the cheap point and shoots won't let you disable the flash.

The wording is stupid.... 200MM on what format? As someone stated, 200mm on a small-sensor digicam is pretty long. And smaller than f2.8? f4, f5.6, f8, etc., are all SMALLER than f2.8! f1.8, f1.4, f1.2 are LARGER!

These maroons don't know what they're doing. They're just trying to protect the pros who work the event. Now that more capable technology is in the hands of "amateurs", they often get show up for what they are ... pros only because of the equipment own.


RJ: Yeah, and you put ICE in your beer... ice in a Bud? I was offered that once, and I remember thinking, Huh? It's already WATER!

Trius hits it on the head. Nowadays, it is easy for spectators to sit in the stands, not go through the trouble of obtaining a press pass, and get awesome shots using their D2X and a 200MM F2.8 VR lens. Or whatever lens. The press is irritated, freelance or not, by this, and certainly there are financial reasons for the regulations. Someone is protecting their bank account.

And, if no flashes or large aperture lenses are allowed, you really can't get those marketable shots that the pros will get down on the ice.
