No money, GAS and meditation?

Tight on money, still have GAS and so I practice a form of meditation. Just prowling around on the classifieds, same as usual, but no pulling of the trigger. Just watching and watching my mind. Will the GAS subside when money is tight? Will it just continue or grow? I watch my mind and I watch the classifieds, every day.
Just finished shooting 2 rolls of Kodak Color 400 in the bright sunshine of Florida with my ND-4 filter that I forgot I had. Will see results later today.
 
I have two approaches to GAS - either I research like mad, searching for reviews/images that validate my desire or I search flickr & online galleries for pictures taken with kit that I already have. I sometimes find that quite inspiring.

Right now I'm GASing for a Hexar AF and do have the money (it's in my new car fund but that can wait 😀) but I can't find one locally or for a good price.

Personally, I find that not checking classifieds/eBay to work for me.

In extreme cases, I skip any tech-related posts unless it is related to something I already own and I certainly don't check any "Look what came in the mail" posts 😀
 
How about setting up a camera or equipment swop with someone?
That should take some enterprise and might take you away from the classifieds.
Just a thought!

As back alley said, shutting myself out from classifieds section helps. Even though I see something looking nice on the top page teaser, I just force myself to stay within top 3/4 of the page.

Another way is buy something totally different from Camera/Photo stuff that cost less and/or can be balanced out easily. This works for a while even after the purchase as my gadget interest stays away from camera stuff. (of course it will come back shortly)

I just bought an used vintage bicycle to get away from camera GAS.

Another more realistic way is to pay up all cards/utilities/etc even way before dues to thin out my wallet so I won't easily fall for another GAS.
 
With a new house, my wife seems to get at the head of the line for spare cash (to go into the house). This is what happens, I guess, when you buy an old house. Anyway no cash is a good time to refocus on shooting which is what we are all here for anyway. Right? right?
 
When I feel that restless urge for a new toy - when I know I should not, I often sit at my desk, get out the Nikkormat FT2 that I bought new in '75, I place it on the desk, surrounded by a few of those carefully collected Nikkors, examine, fondle, and marvel once more at the superb engineering quality. I ask myself the question - 'if I could buy such a jewel today - how much would it cost?', and when I look at the pictures it has unfailingly produced all over the world, things come into perspective!. Next day, as I pass the town center camera store, those black plastic DSLR's don't look quite so hot!......but sh*t! - that little DP2 would be nice in my top-pocket!🙁

I was so close to send PM to the seller of that sweet M-Rokkor on the classifieds just now. I really gotta stop seeing the Classifieds section. Probably I should browse RFF on a RSS reader only. 😛
 
At first I thought this was a serious thread on the relationship of real meditation to gas, i.e. desire. Silly me. 😀

But to be a bit serious, since I started real meditation in April of this year, my GAS truly has subsided a lot, maybe something like 75-90%. Not sure how to measure that!

In any event, looking at the classifieds, evilBay, other forums where gear is bought/sold/swapped is the true opposite of meditation, as it stimulates thought which feeds into desire, whether the desire is true need or not.

That's not to say I don't look at all ... I still have some active searches on the bay, but I don't pull the trigger on any of them unless it's something that fits into a plan and is an absolute steal. But I don't ever regret not purchasing; if I were to purchase on impulse, then I would regret it!
 
I find the most frustrating experience to be logging on in the morning ... seeing something that I really badly wanted that has gone because buyers were prowling while I was sleeping due to the time zone difference ... that I couldn't really afford anyway!

It's such a hollow empty feeling to have to deal with before you've even had your coffee! 😛
