Snorting silver salts
I don't care what kind of color is under my black gaffa tape! I'm in stealth mode all the time anyway.

I waited for years before taking the plunge and buying my red dot with M camera attached. So, I'll be d@*$#d if I'm going to give it up. A Leica dot in any other color (including red) would smell as sweet.

Yes, I'd heard that M8s sent in for upgrade that had black dots (red replaced by owner) were being returned with red dots. I removed my black dot and replaced it with the original red before sending in the camera for upgrade.
Bob.
Sorry, Bob, the rumour you heard is untrue. Black remains black. I have three instances to prove it.

I'm interested: Has anyone seen or heard of the red dot being replaced with a 'home-made' dot of unusual design? Or perhaps having the dot filled on models such as the M6?

Pressing your finger (or a pencil eraser) hard against the dot and turning it right and left will work it loose to the point you can just lift it off with your nail.
Well I replaced one dot, this pencil eraser method got me nowhere. I ended up prying it off with a needle. Gaff tape works for me.

Wow....
Good that I got my M8.2 silver with black logo.
I also have a black logo and red logo when I need to changed them.

It is being done all the time. It is all too easy to slip it off, paint it black (or any other colour you fancy) and stick it on again. Or indeed make some other dot like a Smiley and use that.

Maybe an ersatz frameline illuminator window decal?
A big round LED eye tied to the frameline illuminator LEDs? Think Iron Man. It would focus the subjects' eyes right on the camera to make sure that every shot had eye contact.

Badge delete is free on Porsches, Mercedes and BMWs. The model number is deleted and not the car brand.Several German automakers (MB, Porsche and perhaps BMW) offer an option, for which one pays a few hundred dollars, known as something like "badge delete." For the extra money, they will take the model number off of the trunk lid. I certainly preferred my "badge-less" M4's plain face to my "red-dotted" M6 or even my new black-dotted M8. Yup, I'd much rather have the screw head of the M2, M3, M4, MP over the red dot.
I prefer the red dot.

Shaken, so blurred
Perhaps it's just me, but my guess is that in this post-Snowden era the "Lidless Eye of Sauron" look of the red dot might not sit well with some. At least electrical tape makes for an easy fix.
