No New M9 but M8-2 - Leica Announcement

1200 Euros is $1780 Canadian dollars at the moment, not $2400.

you'd think they would've figured out how to sell digital rangefinder system now and start releasing newer models at a cheaper price kinda like Nikon D1,2,3 or Canon 10,20,30,40D. 1200euros for an upgrade? How about 2000 euros for the next M?

So the future M8 secondhand market will now become competitive with upgraded and non upgraded cameras ... hello!

1200 Euros equates to $2000.00 Aust plus the cost of getting it there and back ... no thanks Leica ... I use it little enough as it is without adding to the folly! If anyone wants to swap an as new M8 with less than 2000 actuations for a similar condition D300 and some good glass PM me! :bang:

I'm so glad I had a good stock of popcorn; this has been the most fun since FrankG went off to do porn or Mattocks imploded!

Thanks for the update. Any news on the R-D10? I'd like about 8MP, 1.2 crop factor, Leica R lens mount, decently low noise to ISO 1600, (OK I will settle for 1000) and traditional controls: Shutter speed dial on top where it belongs. A fairly simple, intuitive menu. Direct access buttons for many functions, like the Digilux 2 has. Price under $2000.

1.2 crop factor: A 21mm=25mm; 24mm=28.8mm; 28mm=34mm; 35mm=42mm. , a "true normal" focal length. Seems good to me.

As a non-Lerica user I can only shake my head! If this "Upgrade Strategy" were really true it would be the best joke in the history of photography. Who has EVER heard of a company charging you to get LESS performance and to replace a LCD screen????

It seems Leica can do just about anything to their customers. When will Leica users finally stand up and tell them enough is enough? First you have to put filters on your precious lenses, then you have to put up with faulty firmware upgrades and now this!

I hope and wish all Leica users that this is just a nasty rumour!

*yawn*

it's late (here) and all I can see is that based on the list pasted here (I have no urge nor desire to go sifting through a rumour posted on a blog somewhere online) is that I still would have to buy IR cut filters and that there is still a lot of noise above ISO 640 - if that's the case (and that's taking the "if" with a grain of salt the size of Mt Everest), I'll take a pass on the M8-2.

Even more so because I would be paying $5,000+ USD for an M8 and then ANOTHER 1200 Euros just to get a camera that still isn't as good as it could have been had they done it right the first time :D

I can't wait to see the "official" announcement though ..... ;)

Earl...
I can make them now with the 5D....and I didn't have to pay 1200 Euros for an "upgrade" too!! :D

Still waiting for a full-frame black and white 8 mp sensor that's not too grainy at 800 ISO with no LCD and a Leica/Ikon rangefinder and a couple dials for $1700.......

Oh yeah, and a "your cap is on numb-nuts" flashy LED.

$1800 is noticeably less than the average cost of trading in, for example, a canon 1dmkii for a 1dmkiin. kudos leica.

Sigh. I hate to comment on rumors but...
I LIKE the idea of upgrading your camera for a fee. If you want to keep up with the Joneses, as many digital shooters seem to do, you can choose to go for the upgrade. No need to worry about selling your current camera at a great loss or add it to the landfill.
The upgrade fee is probably less than the depreciation on selling the camera used. I spend money upgrading my car all the time and since the M8 costs the same as my car...
It would also give the M8 the ability to be the family heirloom camera, passed down from father to daughter but able to keep up with whatever is current. Just like putting modern film in my M4!

what happens when there is a siginifcant enogh breakthrough in technology so that its better and cheaper to simply make an m9? Like a fullframe sensor? Which in todays world, is probably sooner rather than later.

What does leica, or m8 users do then? Leica sure can't afford to give m8ers m9s, and m8ers who have spend over 8.000 on the body alone sure aren't going to want to take a huge loss on their camera..

I walked into a store to buy a new camera. I looked at an M7 then an M8. I left with a Zeiss Ikon and a new 28mm lens along with 3000 dollars in my pocket. I'm not disappointed at all.

Man, I had to chime in...

I am not a professional photographer. I love my M8 even with the quirks and headaches. I love Leica glass (addict.)

1200 euros to get less speed so I can get 6ft closer to a subject without being as loud and a LCD upgrade to view a shot that will look different anyway when opened in software is umm...a misfire IMHO. I actually would be very surprised if this were the whole story.

Again, I am not a pro, so I pose a question to you professional photographers using an M8...

Do these modifications help you significantly such as a bit lower volume shutter at a quiet event you are shooting? Does the liquid crystal LCD scratch resistant glass allow you to have a better long term viewing while shooting?

And if the answer is yes, can you write it off on your taxes?

I hope so :)

I don't see the logic in making a comparison between a $4 roll of film and a $2000 "upgrade" on a digital camera.

As someone standing on the sidelines, this strategy, if true, is insane.

But some people will do what they need to do to make sure their Leica is the newest available.

So, based on rumor, I'll be able to pick up a good but imperfect RD-1 AND a good but imperfect M8 for the price of a questionably better but still imperfect "M8-2"????

Can I start the thread titled "Post Your Pictures of You Shagging the Mrs and/or Cat"?

;)

Okay, I believe it.

In fact, I like the idea of a modular camera that can be upgraded indefinitely - and the 24-month warranty that comes with it. What I don't like is the idea of spending $5 thousand for a camera - then another ~$2 thousand when it's still under the original warranty.

If Leica is the name it puffs itself up to be, they'll offer these upgrades (whatever they are) to customers with cameras still under warranty.
