Nocticron !!!

One of the reasons why I left m43rds was the fact that Leica consistently did not work with Panasonic on a 17.5mm Summicron which would ideally compliment the 25/1.4 and existing 45/2.8.

The exsting 45/2.8 is an astonishingly good lens and adding another in a similar focal range is, imho, a complete waste of time.

Mind you, no one ever accused Leica of making good product management decisions so I suppose this is pretty much par for the course.

I doubt that Leica is in full control of Panasonic's product planning. Panasonic is countering the excellent Olympus 45mm f/1.8 with a similar focal length lens that includes the MOIS system.

The Macro-Elmarit 45 is superb, but many people were put off by the f/2.8 speed as they wanted a 45mm portrait lens with more DoF control capability. The Nocticron should fulfill those people's desire with an f/1.2 max aperture.

There are now four lenses in the 17-20 mm range for mFT. ... I'd go with the Olympus 17/1.8 for AF, or the Voigtländer 17/0.95 for extreme speed and DoF control.

Seems to me that Leica has made many many excellent product management decisions, given that in the past three-four years their profits have risen by 30% per year compared to most of the camera manufacturing industry experiencing something of a downward profitability issue...

When the Nocticron was announced, the thought of cancelling my Voigtlander 42.5mm preorder crossed my mind. As its primary use would be for video, and often run and gun, having AF ability would be very useful. The difference between f1.2 and f0.95 isn't that much; perhaps the difference between ISO 800 and 1250 under the same lighting conditions. And I'm still toying with that idea while my credit card has still yet to be charged.

On the weekend, I was forced to shoot in very dark conditions that pushed a f2.8 lens into ISO 2500+ territory, which looks pretty nasty on the GH3 when using 1080 50p IPB MOV. The CV 25/0.95 allowed me to shoot at ISO 800, which gave me wonderful results. I just wonder if f1.2 would have made the grade, or whether I should have that extra speed just in case something even more challenging arises.

The tradeoff between a f1.2 lens with OIS and AF, vs a manually focusing f0.95 lens. Hm. It would feel silly to have both, not to mention hurt my wallet at this juncture. It is notable that focus pulling with the CV Noktons is miles ahead any focus by wire m43 lenses at this time. But grabbing critical focus is overall much faster with a Panasonic AF lens on the GH3.

It's a tough decision for me too, as I generally prefer manual focusing over any AF system. But there are time when AF is useful ...

The capsule truth is that there are now a LOT of excellent lens choices in mFT. And that can only be good... 🙂
