Noctilux 0.95 ASPH not all that distinctive?

i apologise if i was overly defensive -- i've heard one too many f/1 bashings and how stupendous the new f/.95 is and i took it out on you. mea culpa. i did it out of the true love i have for this lens.

and i had to laugh about your comment on the Canon f/.95 -- that, too, has tempted me. i'm kicking myself for not picking one up relatively inexpensively when i had the chance, but i was already tapped out after the Nocti :bang:

(and i've been looking for a 60mm Hex too 😛)

It's all good Cam. Yeah the Canon has the most distinctive look for sure but really not great for the money unless you want that look all the time. For me, I always wanted a fast 50mm liek the Noct without the unique signature and I've found it. but of course, I could do with some more craziness wide open at times 😀
 
I bought an f/1 Noct about a month ago. I've loved my 50 Lux last pre-ASPH and really didn't feel the need for a Noct, but I bought it anyway. The price was decent enough. I still haven't seen a single shot out of it. I'm hoping that I really like how it looks.

After trying to get a feel for the lens looking around the web for shots I sick of everyone shooting yard junk with it. It's basically a yard junk lens from all I can tell. Yard junk at f/1 is even less interesting than it is at f/2 or f/8 or whatever.

This was my point earlier. This lens requires interesting content for longevity with the owner. Many buyers use it to make boring subjects less boring by utilizing it's bokeh qualities until they realize it's just too big to use on boring images, especially once the novelty wears off. A Noct owner must work hard at making the images work as the more one puts into it, the more they get back. I think most Noct owners end up having around 2 in their lifetime.

Right and I agree with your statement. No lens will make a bad picture good. Nor are pictures with shallow DoF somehow more interesting than those stopped down. I generally shoot with slow film in limited light, so the f/1 aperture is nice. I shot what I normally shoot with the Noct, so we'll see what I think. I am eagerly awaiting my scans from NCPS.
 
Took this today wide open at closest focusing 1M. Shot against the sun, it has some interesting flare effects.

what can i say? i am ashamed. i use my f/1 to photograph at night. even worse, i'm only on my first lens and it's with me whenever i venture out at night, even in the rain.

I'm obviously not talking specifically about your shots. I shoot at night and in lower light with ISO 50 film. I agree with the points you made earlier. I guess I should have said, yard junk in daylight. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what I can get out of my Noct.

you will love it! as gorgeous as it is on digital, i find it ten times more beautiful on film.

much as i love my M2, i often kick myself for not getting the M3 so i could explore it fully. oh well, some day.

in the meanwhile, check out maddoc's flickr stream. he has a lot of meltingly beautiful images, shot with the f/1 on film. it will give you an idea of what you have to look forward to.

Maddoc definitely takes some great shots with it. I've picked up an M3 and should have it next week. I've been shooting it mostly on my Ikon thus far.
 
Has anyone used a Noctilux on an Ikon? I would have thought the camera was made/ideal for this lens with it's amazing viewfinder and long EBL.
 
the Ikon's not really a slouch in the finder department, either 😛

i'll be interested to hear (and see, obviously) how you like it on the M3.

(i don't shoot my M2 near enough -- iam weirdly so much more comfortable metering at night or in very low light, time my Nocti is king...)

Great to finally see a new Cam shot ! It had been a long time ! 😉
 
I see too many people using the Noctilux to make boring photos with plain/generic subjects popping out by using the short DOF.
I do not mean to be rude, but I see a few even on this thread. I would probably be tempted to do the same though if I had it. Resist the temptation!
And again, there are some great shots on this thread (see Leicashots photos of people), but the centered composition, generic branch on the ground and sign by the road kind of photos are just blah.
So, back to the point-- the light collecting ability is probably just as important to a lot of people as the bokeh quality. So, if you can shoot wide open with improved quality (0.95), why not?
