How can I justify purchase of Noctilux? I have already 50 cron and 90 cron. Does the lens bring, besides two more aperture stops, an advantage compared to cron?
What about discontinued 75/1.4? Can its optical properties be compared to 75/2?
Note: As you know the (new???) Noctilux is now much more expensive. I know about one for lower than original price.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Well I think if you're not concerned enough about two extra stops to justify it then it's not worth it. I doubt it will impress with better sharpness or optical qualities than a summicron. But for god's sake man, TWO EXTRA STOPS !

I use both lenses not for the extra stops .... but for the unique character wide open. NO other lens renders like a Noctilux at f1.0.
75 Summilux vs Summicron is up to personal taste .... the 75 summicron is far more practical (smaller, lighter and easier and faster to focus) ... but the 75 lux images are different .. very different ("painterly" vs "more clinical" summicron). Lot's of homework to do before you decide
Do a seach on Flickr for pictures with the lenses and find out for yourself what you like!
Here are two samples of the 75 summilux at 1.4 on the M8 ...

Both awesome pics!! As has been said, in both cases the lenses are totally different in the way they render the picture. Do a search on flickr as recommended above to see for yourself.

There's nothing to justify. Just do it. If you don't like it, you can always sell it to someone else.
I have one that I have used for less than 50 shots in 3 years. Focusing is slow and difficult at f1, so it's not an easy lens to shoot. But when I get the shots at F1, they're surreal. And I know that I'll always be able to sell it without loss.

Thanks! These new parents were so ga-ga over their little girl that the hardly noticed me. The 75mm focal length lets you step back half a step and maintain a sense of intimacy. I was sad to hear that they are going to stop making this lens, but I am happy with my sample. Does this mean I would say no to a 75 Summicron if it fell into my lap? No, hardly. I understand that the 75 Summicron is from the same "family" of design as the new 50/1.4 Asph, which is an awesome optic.
I have to say, one of the thing that I find most appealing about the M8 (I don't own one, but would like to) is its ability to reliably focus the Noctilux and other fast glass wide open. My R-D1 one does ok with the 50/1.4 Asph, but the 75 Summilux and the Noctilux are a little hit and miss.

The 75/1.4 and the 75/2 are both incredible lenses. I have both and I'd have to say that the summilux has the more beautiful image character, but the 75/2 has better overall performance in a much more convenient package. If you are just looking for a straightforward lens that delivers perfect fidelity, get the 75/2. If you are looking for a lens with beautiful, gentle character, get the 75/1.4. It is very hard to choose between them since they are both masterpieces.

Hello Zdenek,
some weeks ago I had to solve the same question 2.0 or 1.4.
After comparing the the both lenses for me the 1.4 was to big, fat and over not a lense I want to use with the MP.
So I bought the 2.0 APO 75, unfortunately it's only in black available.
The lense quality is over all outstanding good,
but that's nothing new to a Leica product.

Hello Martin,
Pleased to hear from you, Martin. I do some search and concluded that 'cron 75 will be sufficient.
Er,... isn't time for a trip to Prague?

Is 75 summilux discontinued already? It is still there in the homepage of Leica??
Are they going to replace with another Asph version?

I had checked the homepage of Leica. 75 summilux is still there (in Leica USA).
May be they haven't updated their webpage?

Probably not. The discontinuation message came out of Leica NJ. They were planning to fulfil all outstanding orders up to the announcement date then shipping stops.

did you guys know why Leica decided to discontinue this lens?
I was planning to get one earlier. Is it still a good idea to get one then? Is the used price going to go up or go down, I wondered?

Question
Why would focusing be slow? It is not an SLR, it's an RF camera. I think that the RF is very fast focusing. Once the patch is aligned shoot. I use DSLR alot, but I think RF is faster.
