Noctilux for my M8: Serial Number and date of production.

Hi everyone,

The Noctilux I bought on Ebay for my M8 recently for $4,500 has the serial # 3940347. Now I have been checking ebay and there are some with lower serial numbers that are going for much more than I paid ($6,000 and up), leaving me to believe I got a very good deal in that this lens is much newer than I thought (I thought it could be from the late 1990's). It needs to be adjusted for proper focus, the buyer said Leica would cover it in that it was serviced and is under warrenty. So when was this lens made?

So when was this lens made?

It is not exactly possible to know when it was made, it is "too new" and serial number/item are no more made public.
Besides serial numbers doesn't follow a strict rule of order at Leica factory.
But knowing that a lens with number 3809+++ was made in 1997 and one with s/n 4001+++ in 2000, you may think this Noctilux could be made about 1998-99.
