Noct owners: please chime in and say that "Made in Canada" is engraved on your latest version.
And there has been no "E Leitz proper" for a long time -- it was split into L. Geosystems, L Microsystems and L Camera, distinct companies with only the name in common.
- Indeed; my Noctilux is marked with 'Made in Canada', - as I understand, made by a subsidiary of a weapons producer (Raytheon) that is black listed by Norwegian Governmental Pension Fund - you find them here: http://www.norges-bank.no/nbim/
It strikes me that the Leica shareholders have earned a lot of money up through the years, and typically they have all vanshed when the company is in trouble. Now it is up to the austrian Kaufman family to turn it around and get it through the paradigm shift - going digital - of the camera industry. It stands and falls with the loyalty of Leica fans.
1)
I will strongly advice Leica managment to get a new supplier of the Noctilux - or make it themselves.
2)
When it comes to the M8; we, Leica fans, are holding our breaths. Make us a reliable one by next year called M8s (or something) that works (no freezing) and with only one 'fault' left to fix; the IR cast - which can be helped with lense filters , for now. We'll buy it.

We're all light!
Mazurka: thanks for clearing things up. I was right about Hughes owning ELCAN (once), but woefully out of the loop about their current status. Also remembered the multiple Leitz spin-offs, but fuzzed-out on the details.

It's a great investment opportunity. Buy the Noctilux now, use it for a few years. Then, if you want, sell it for a few dollars more than you bought it. Look at it as an opportunity!

I would suggest not holding your breath while you wait...

Here's an "investment" for the daring: Noctilux 1.2 I hope no one here goes for it. If you do, get proof first.

Proof of what? Is it often forged?

it is time for leica to bring out a asph noctilux, smaller size etc to justify the new price, or maybe a 35/1.0...

The f/1.2 Noctilux had (hand polished) aspherical surfaces, but the f/1 doesn't.

If it had ASPH glass Leica would have sold it for $15,000

If it had ASPH glass it probably wouldn't vignette so much.

Oh, so the current 50/1 is designed without aspherical surfaces. Impressive.

So get yourself a 15/2.8 Distagon, another inexpensive "little" lens...

I would rather spend $5000 on a 5D and 85 or 50mm f/1.2
Still would have enough left over to pick up a M3 and first generation 50 Lux

My vote to your proposal...but I'd definitely go for the 50mm/1.2. 50mm is always my favourite FL. I almost added an FD 50mm/1.2L to my F-1 set up before I went into Leica M. I also have 85mm/1.2L...and it's a pain to focus...for me.

Guy! The backlash is crazy! Compared to Canon, paying $2200NZ for a f2.8 28mm sounds insane. The Canon could be bought for $600NZ. I for one don't care about the price increase. I am considering buying one if the digi switch doesn't work out, but I got into Leica knowing the mountain of money I might have to part with to get my dream kit. I complained when a Big Mac combo went from $5NZ to $6NZ overnight. This is a bit different.
