I'm using a Nikon Coolscan IV that was purchased news and has probably had less than 20 rolls of film put through it. For most of its life, it's sat idle except the occasional scan. I've only really just started using it, and it's starting to make some strange sounds like maybe it needs lubricated (almost a grinding sound). In spite of being rather noisy, the scans are still turning out fine.

Any ideas? :(

Mine is also loud and makesa chugging sound. The thought never came to mind that it should be quieter, actually.
<edit>For the record, I have a V ED</edit>

At first I read that you had a noisy CCD, that would be a different thing altogether!

My CS 9000 sounds very rough, grinding, chattering and buzzing in the most irregular manner, particularly when scanning at the higher resolutions.

There may be a problem, but likely not.

I was wondering, as initially when I started using the Coolscan IV ED it was a very smooth sounding noise (almost a hum) as it read in the slide/negative. Now I think the statement "very rough, grinding, chattering and buzzing" sums it up quite nicely.

I have one too and it's the transport for the film feeder that makes the grinding noises. If you use the slide holder, it's quieter.
