They're using a 41mp sensor and downsampling to a 5mp output file.

If it is like on the other Nokias, it will be called Tessar, but be a multi-aspheric thing made of coated plastics.

Falk Lumo has a fascinating preliminary analysis of this camera. If he's right this is a tremendously exciting development, and likely my next digital camera. Also via Lumo, here's the Nokia whitepaper.

Note that in wide angle mode it can capture full-res 30+ Mpix images from the FIXED Zeiss lens. Note further the sensor size (large) and the extremely tight manufacturing tolerances (decentering is eliminated by using the camera's own contrast-based AF detection for on-the-fly final fitting of lens to sensor).

If only it was running Windows 7 instead of Symbian. No matter. If this camera is what it's cracked up to be, I'll take Symbian.

Nokia started to make Windows 7 phones just last year, and now symbian is ancient... And they are probably still developing and upgrading it (releasing new Symbian phone proves it).

Windows (be it 7 or any other version) is based on something Microsoft made in the 80's... Yes... They are still developing and upgrading it, but one could say that it's ancient compared to symbian. 😛

+1 on that. I don't think symbian was known for bricking phones and Android is Google, enough said. At least symbian gives an option to avoid the Micro$oft/Apple/Google mess.

That seems to be the case; if so you're right, it's reason enough to get the cam.

It takes the 41 mp and turns out a sharp 8 or something. I just imagine such a process on a full frame sensor---8x10 format rez from a leica sized body--or smaller. What a landscape machine that would be. 🙂

No, Symbian was hopelessly outdated long before Nokia decided to go with that other doomed phone OS. Meego looked promising (albeit it was somewhat sabotaged by the symbian department forcing them to put qt in there as well as gtk), but I guess that cash infusion from Microsoft was more tempting than continuing a good thing. The fact that they still decide to put out new symbian handsets does surprise me somewhat, though. A windows 8 tablet would've been more in line with their current strategies.

A Nokia employee explained why they put this phone out.

They made the clearview technology and had the sensor, but the only platform that is powerful enough is symbian. They have another cpu just for the image sensor. Android, wp or ios cannot support such a thing.
Nokia just wanted to throw it out to the people and this was the only way.

The other question would be, does it not have a bayer filter at all?
If so, I don't need to think about the Sigma DP1m anymore, this 808 is in practice a foveon cam .... (with a bunch of other features added, like cellphone).
