Non 6 bit modified lenses on a Leica 8 or 8.2

Hello, I am new to the world of rangefinder cameras. What will I loose in terms of picture quality when using non 6-bit coded lenses (from 28mm upwards), on a Leica 8 or 8.2 body? Many thanks for your feedback! P

If you shoot RAW (which you should), you will loose nothing in image quality. But you won't get lens information in your exif data.

Purple blacks which you need some fancy filter to cure. Same filter needs a coded lens.

I suggest you use tri x or become proficient in photoshop with radial gradients, actions, and fancy selections, or just convert M8 to monochrome. All this can be fixed in photoshop. I pity a wedding photog though.

Maybe the M9 will not have these problems.
 
At 28mm you MAY see a tiny bit of colour fringing or vignetting, depending on the lens, but these problems grow worse (and are still far from bad in most cases) with wider angles.

Coding makes no difference to UV/IR sensitivity ond none that I have seen to ameliorate purple blacks: that's the job of the UV/IR filter. You can use UV/IR filters with non-coded lenses: I do so on my 35/1.4 pre-aspheric (which is Series VII, same as 24/1.4) and my 50/1.5 C-Sonnar.

You can overstate the purple black problem too:it's only severe under artificial lighting, and not with all black fabrics then.

One of my favourite lenses on the M8/M8.2 is the 90/2.2 Thambar which isn't even coated, let alone having a UV/IR filter. I also like the 135/2.8 very much for landscapes: again, no UV-IR.

This is based on using the M8 for 3 years and the M8.2 since it came out.

In my experience UV/IR filter corrects magenta cast in many black fabrics, excessive yellow in foliage under sunlight, and gives more natural skin tones (are sometimes too magenta) and I use it on all my lenses.
Coding will allow the camera to correct vignetting and cyan cast in the corners with wide angle lenses (from 35 mm up I haven't experienced any real problems)
In the few cases where I have had some vignetting and cyan cast in the corners with uncoded lenses of 35mm and wider I have corrected it using cornerfix software.http://sourceforge.net/projects/cornerfix/
