I got a nice set of 15x15cm (6x6in) Ilford Multigrade enlarger filters which I (obviously) didn't think to check if they would fit my enlarger. I have a Lucky, it's a Japanese brand.

The holder itself is about 11x11cm but the area inside for the actual filter isn't square and closer to 11x10cm. I saw Ilford has a 89x89mm filter set but that wouldn't quite fit the holder either although definitely covering up the negative area.

Is there such a thing as standard filter holder sizes or do people simply buy large filters and cut them down ? (which seems like a waste)

I have a Lucky enlarger and I tried the Ilford 89mm square filters. While they can be made fit, the area where the filter is held by the metal clamp is just so tiny that any movement will shake the filter out of it's place and getting a potential scratch on it.

I'd suggest cutting a larger filter to size or do what I did, use a filter under the lens...

Yes, cut them down or use the type of filter for under the lens but these type filters are more expensive.
You can also build the head over to a Heiland Split Grade system.
