What weekend/days do you plan to be in Asheville and Greenville?

Also, the Interstate is so boring, I would recommend you get off the Interstate and onto the Blueridge Parkway at Roanoke, Va. The most scenic road is south of there anyway all the way into Tennessee!

It will add hours to your drive but it is well worth it. It will actually take you through Asheville....🙂 Then, for a scenic drive, go south to the southern end and it is amazing!
 
I should be in Asheville by august 6th.

South Carolina is the only place I've visited in the USA. Charleston was a pretty nice town, but be warned that they don't sell beer in your hotel. So after a long exhausting hot trip, finally at my hotel, I had to drink bloody coca cola, it was all they had. Bring some booze or suffer.

Why Tri-X? You will have more sunshine than you need.
Figure warm to warmer to hot to hotter during the day in all of North & South Carolina. Warmest in Greenville. By all means go to the mountains in North Carolina. Away from the tourists. If you have time and a car, find the smallest roads between Asheville & Boone. Wave to my daughter in Boone. 😎 😉

Agreed on the destinations recommended above (Asheville, Hendersonville, Greenville, Chimney Rock, etc.). I am in Charlotte. It is a place to fly into (international airport) or drive through (as your itinerary indicates you will do), but not very interesting. (It is as if we had La Défense without the rest of Paris. 🙂)

I agree with Dave Lackey about the Interstate highways (our autoroutes): you will not see much interesting there. (But if you simply need to get from one place to another at 125 km/h, that is the way.) I am extremely familiar with this part of Interstate 81 (a subset of the part that you will drive according to your itinerary) and can assure you it is a very long, boring drive.

Recently here we have had a canicule. It has been 40 C, which is almost unprecedented. But it is abating already. About 32 C is normal for Charlotte in summer. The mountains are cooler.

If you are shooting in wide open sun, you could use ISO 25 here; ISO 100 film would be quite fast enough. The one remaining film shop in Charlotte (Biggs Camera) offers Kodak and Ilford products (no Fuji, no Efke) and are quite good to deal with. And as Joe (Livesteamer) mentioned above, Ball Photo in Asheville have film. (I do not recall which kinds.) Peace Camera in Raleigh should have it as well.

For your work, you might also look into Serenbe in Georgia. I have read about it although not visited there.

Break out of your rut. Try pulling some nice slow film.
Enjoy your stay. Even East Coast seafood and BBQ is edible. Running for cover.

In the early 90's I developed an intense interest in the mountains of North Carolina after seeing the movie... "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis.

I don't think it would be possible to describe the impact this movie delivers about the forests and mountains of NC unless you rent it and view it.

May seem a bit odd as a reference, but it was a most impactful presentation of the environment of the Carolina's I have encountered.

Those from NC may have other opinions of the movie, but I was impressed.

The first eco-village that comes to my mind is Earthaven (http://www.earthaven.org/). I've never been. There are a few others, I think, as well as many small farms that might fit your bill. Check out http://www.asapconnections.org/.
 
I worked a customer in Asheville called the Organic Mechanic. I delivered an eco friendly motor oil we sell. I think it was on Haywood Rd. Interesting part of town.
 
i live in asheville as well. funny little city. most of the places on lexington ave are good people and for film Ball photo has the widest selection, best coffee is izzy's, and a never ending supply of homeless folks doing the most bizarre things to take photos of.

Ah...that is all I need to know, a good coffee house!:angel: Tri-X and coffee. Sounds like a plan with those deep shadows and caffeine.
