I think it's just a way to skip to deeper pages more quickly. If you click on page 3 from there, it should then say something like 5, 6, 7, 15.

I think... At least that's what I've seen on some other forums.

This feature was introduced with the software update. I find it quite useful. Before you had the choice something like 1.2.3.4.5.last. With this way you can get to the middle a lot quicker.
