Not a common Barnack Canon camera

Canon Camera

Canon Camera

It looks to me like an S or S1 that has been modified (maybe by Canon). I think that the serial number is too high for an NS, and I think that all NS cameras had leather over the spot where the slow speed dial would be found. The flash sync looks like it is an after-market addition. It is not clear whether the camera is in working condition.

The camera is a hybrid NS or S-1 but the late serial # points towards an S-1 with J-II connotations. Beside the non-Canon, added flash ports it is a genuine camera cobbled together shortly after Canon got the go ahead from the SCAP authorities to begin production again in October 1945. The slow speed dial patch indicates that the company had run out of slow speed mechanisms, as was the case with the J-II. Therefore, this camera is a transitional model where the company had used up the last of its S parts and before the J-II was released. The early J-II had the company name engraved across the top as seen on this camera and pictured in my book on page 118. An interesting camera indeed.
