Hello. I have read that the M5 cannot accept collapsible lens (so not to disturb the metering), my question would be which would be the smallest leica lens to use with this camera, so that it could be "near pocketable" ?
I do not think this camera is so big ! Not as heavy as a zorki 3...😛

Hello there in Brussels,

Gent calling.
You can use any collapsible lens on the M5. You just have to put a kind of 'band' around the font side of the lensbarrel so that the lens would not collapse completely in the body, about 1 cm large will do for the Elmar, I used an piece of an inner tire of an bicycle, keep it simple!

Good luck,

You might want to check on the new CV 50/2, but I'm not sure that is small enough. If you want small, look at the CV 35/2.5 Pancake, with an LTM to M adapter you are set with a very small kit.

Look in a good hardware store that has a large selection of O-rings. Prexes (not sure about the name, it's been years) might have something. Put them at the front of part of your lens barrel and they work great. You might need two, depending upon the width of them.

With the right O-rings, just about any of the 50s will work. Somewhere on the internet I remember someone giving the max depth for a M5. You might check on the CL too as I think they share the same design. As long as you are a few mm away from the arm you should be fine.

The more I think about it do some searching on the CL too.

I'm not a 50 guy, sorry.

The new 28mm/2.8 Elmarit M ASPH is the one of the smallest lenses for M-mount cameras. It does not have rear elements that stick back very far and is compatible with all Leica cameras. Though the M5 does not have 28mm framelines, you can use the entire viewfinder area to frame images, with the exception of very close focus distances, where you would have to guess at parallax error. This is what Gary Winogrand did when using 28mm's.

The 35mm Summicrons are also pretty small, and are all safe for M5. The Version 4 or ASPH models are good. They are slightly bigger and much heavier than the new 28mm which only weighs 180 grams.

Loop,

An inexpensive option is a 40mm summicron, which is a compact, excellent lens.
You can modify it to bring up the 35 framelines, which is what I did.
I use it on my m5 all the time.
I have a current elmar 50 M and use a ring of flexible clear plastic tubing on the barrel to keep it from collapsing.

Welcome to our select group!

Welcome to our select group!

What everyone said is true. I have a Canon 35/2.8, early, all chrome and it is very compact and very nice. I discovered something night before last. I had my 50/2.0 DR Summicron and Nikkor 50/1.4 together, side by side. The Nikkor 50/1.4 is really small compared to the Summicron. It is shorter and the diameter is smaller at the mount end. It has to be one of the most compact 50/1.4 lenses around. Together, the two older lenses (35 & 50) form a very compact duo on the M5.

The exceptionally well made CV 50/2.5 is extremely small- as small as the collapsable summicron 50 is when in. The Summicron 50 does safely go in without hitting the meter cell.

The 21mm Super Angulon is another lens that can't be used on the M5. The deep rear element causes problems with the meter. Too bad, as it's what prompted me to sell a five some years ago and stay with M4.

Actually, 21mm/3.4 Super Angulon M lenses made after 1971, from serial number 2473251 and up, can safely be mounted on the M5. These later Super Angulons have a special notch in the M mount that prevents the meter cell from swinging into the active position. The M5 meter arm thus stays parked and out of the way. The compact SA 21mm/3.4 won't meter on any M camera, though because the rear cell of elements is so deep. They are also not nearly as good as later 21mms like the Leica 21mm/2.8 Elmarit M ASPH or the Zeiss Biogon 21mm/2.8 ZM (though those are both "big" lenses in the world of M mounts). The compact C-Biogon 21mm/4.5 coming out next year will probably be a great compact 21mm.

hey 21mm asph. elmarit users...will this lens mount ok on a CL or M5?

Can't speak to the M5. But it will mount perfectly on a CL. The only concern is the old 21mm Super angulon. The current 21mm asph elmarit will work just fine on the CL. 🙂 That was one of the combos I used in Europe, very compact kit.

hehehe...thanks tom. direct from the source! i thought you would have been out and about. i'm still contemplating 😉

does it meter on the CL as well?

Hello,

You might consider the Minolta Rokkor 40mm, f/2 for a "pocket-able" setup on your M5. I just bought an M5 and a Rokkor to go along with it for that very reason. It's about half the length of my Summicron 50mm that I shoot on my M3.

As someone new to the M5 myself, I'll be interested to hear what you've decided upon. Let us know! 🙂

I would go with a chunky stubby lens. If a lens is too small or too long it will look weird on the M5. I suggest a nice 35mm canon lens with an adapter. I suggest the 35/2 or 35/1.5

28/3.5 Komura
28/2.8 Konica M-Hexanon
35/2.8 Canon
50/1.4 Nikkor
50/2.0 Leitz Summicron
75/2.5 Voigtlander
90/2.8 Leitz Elmarit
135/3.5 Canon

They are all good on an M5. I sometimes wish that they were all black. 😱 :bang: 😎

40 mm nokton 1.4

40 mm nokton 1.4

I'd be tempted by this lens but. M5 has got 35/50/90 frames. Has some of you some experience with this lens ??
Another lens is summicron 35 mm but very expensive, and quality ? some seem:dance: 😱 to dislike this lens for being not sharp ??
