Maybe I can post a Nikon SLR-question among this group of Nikon fans.... I have an old Nikon EM which basically is in min condition but with one problem... The meeter needle is "jumping all over the place" and not at all moving smoothly when I change the apparature. Had the camera been all manual like my FM" I could have just worked in manual mode with an external meeter but that does not work on a Nikon EM. Has anyone experienced this problem and any ideas on if it can be fixed !?

Hi Jon - I have Nikon EM and it's never done this but a place to start might be replacing the battery. If it still misbehaves then the electronics may be faulty - not sure if repairs are possible anymore.

Tried it - took another battery from my FM2 which is brand new but it is unfortunately the same problem....:bang: :bang:

You may have a circuit board problem -- probably something needs replacing. A Nikon specialist may have some parts to fix it; hopefully someone can recommend someone also in Sweden (or not far), but there are some good repairers here in the U.S. Good luck.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but the Nikon EM is simply not worth the fix.what you describe is a normal defect that happens with the Nikon EM.

Yes, you are probably right.... and yes - I know I can get a new EM on Ebay or so for as low as 50 USD I guess and I actually have another EM that works fine --- I just hate to have to through it into the bin.... old cameras should be cared for but I guess in this case I just have to give up !???🙁 🙁

My son's EM does the same thing, but I found a website that tells how to repair the problem. Can't remember the site, but Google Nikon EM repair and somewhere you'll find a diagram. Apparently it's from a set of contacts that need to be cleaned off. I haven't had opportunity to get at my son's yet to see if that really helps. Good luck! Harlee

Having surfed the net I know know the problem is dirt inside the front lens ring on the camera body... There are two suggestions on the net: to turn the apparature ring dozens of times back and forth and through that "clean" it or open up the front lens cover on the camera and clean it with alcohol....

The first suggestion makes it better but not good enough so I have to start to take off the screws but that sounds dangerous....

Operation successful! Thanks for all you comments - Rangefinderforum is great with all the support you can get!

Anyway - did open and clean - I am not really sure I did it the perfect way but that together with just turning the apparature ring about a houndred times back and forth has made the needle behave again. Having compared with another Nikon it actually display the correct values also!

So - camera back in operation and saved from being disposed of!
But - I need to get a good set of screwdrivers abd that´s a recommendation to anyone trying to do this.
