New York November NYC Meet-up?

It was a relaxing meet-up that began with only five of us but grew to ten as the afternoon went on.

Damaso was asking about the upcomming Third Anual Leica M-Body Beauty Contest and this is the first reminder: Our hyper competitive event always takes place in February, but now is the time to start pimping out your cameras.

For two years in a row John Chee has been a strong contender. In the First Annual Leica M-Body Beauty Pagent he even had two remarkable entries the "vintage M9" with the lower serial number when the M9 was brand new and a lever rewind M4 that had a brand new black paint finish equipt with a rapidload. If he had a matching black paint Leicavit I'm sure he would of won.

In the second year of our contest, John lost to Andre's clean M5 retro kit, as this contest was judged on a two lens kit. We also had Cristian assemble a radically assesorized M6 that is beyond description that had plenty of entertainment value.

For the third and best ever pagent I invite John Chee to plan his campain carefully, as I know he will be a strong contender. I also will allow his input to be included in making this year's (2012) rules and guidelines, because I'm routing for John-- the perenial underdog.

As far as prizes: so far I have two antique/retro/collectable light meters. One is a Wetson that Barret gave me that includes the leather case; the second is some bakelite meter that was made in New York that eventually became Sekonic. Its model is "The Holywood Director." and comes with box.

One rule that will be strictly enforced: No Biting.

Damn, I was going to reassemble Christian's M6 monster and just add a Noctilux! ;)

I think Cristian was kinda making fun of my M6 since it has enough accessories to no longer be a small camera. LOL. In fact my M6 closely resembles one of my Nikon F3's with a motordrive and a hand strap. Only differance is mine's a shooter.

I will be putting in a print as a prize although I will not be on hand to enjoy the festivities in February. I do look forward to reading a full report from Barcelona!

Proposed Rules for The Third NYC RRF Leica Pageant Contest

Proposed Rules for The Third NYC RRF Leica Pageant Contest

Cal,

Over the last 9 months, I have been carefully planning for THE event in 2012. The considerations included a M9-P with 0.95 Noctilux, original black M3 with matching black Rigid, 0-Serie Nr.107 (not a Leica M), The 1997 Green Bay Packer Return to the Top M6, Leica M7 Xinhai Revolution, white M8 etc. They are all good contenders but I think the Hello Kitty 20 Jahre M6TTL in hot pink is the best choice for the occasion. I am hoping japancamerahunter.com can track one down on time to make it to the contest.

I propose the following rules and guidelines, feel free to modify/add:

1) Age limit: 18 years of age or older (under aged contestants (cameras) are required to bribe one of the judges with a beer for an entry);
2) Proportional figures: Continue the two (2) lenses + one (1) M body set tradition but the two lenses need to have the same filter size, e.g., both E39 or both E46 (the bigger may not be the better!). Additionally, all gears in the set with serial numbers within 10 years of production range(again, exception can be granted with a beer);
3) No plastic surgery: No shape changing body work has been done (also see accessory rule below). Contestants with dints or scratches will have explaining to do (we want stories, the more dramatic; the better ... pristine condition may not be an advantage);
4) Authenticity: Must be in original finish, no repaint done (must be comfortable under its own skin);
5) Accessories are encouraged but not required: Each add-on requires a reason. Practicality and creativity count. Less may be more here.
6) Play dirty: Each contestant can pick and attack another (just one) contestant of his/her choice (everyone has a little dirty laundry);
7) More than just the look: The set cannot be just pretty ... it has to be functional as well. Maximum two prints (one from each lens in contest max) allowed to show the inner beauty. The artistic value of the photographs will not be part of the judging criteria, rather the optional photographs are there to demonstrate the technical capability of the set;
8) Nudity is strictly prohibited (it's a family oriented event): Leatherette must be on during the course of the contest. But, we don't care how worn out the leatherette is (it can be a nightgown or bikini). It has to be tastefully done; and
9) The winner promises to promote world peace and represent NYC. To start, the winner needs to be our ambassador and go around the bar and talk to people.

John, you'll be my hero if you get this camera... :eek: It's the one collectable camera I want.

Most of the various parts are sold or at least not going back on, but you are welcome to donate a Noctilux to my M6. I think it wants one.

No, I was going to bite your idea...not help you win. :D Though, most who know me know a Noctilux is not something I'm interested in.

Go-John-Go.

BTW the two antique light meters are mucho cool. Both work but need calibration. Damaso's print is another generious prize. In our aggressive New York tradition its winner takes all. As John knows its no mercy. LOL.

A 0.95 Noctilux for me is lovely. Big, chunky and heavy. On my pimped out M6 Tung's 0.95 makes my camera feel like a small bowling ball. Kinda perfect because to me a heavy camera is a steady camera.

You guys have girlfriends? ..... :D

At one of our meet-ups a group of very drunk girls at the next table took exception that we were paying way too much attention to our gear and ignoring them. Then they kinda crashed our meet-up.

It all started when one girl came over to me and asked, "Don't you think I'm pretty?"

My response was, "My girlfriend definately will not like you," and then all hell broke loose. Nothing like drunk girls hanging onto Scott (I think because the girls knew that his M9 was high status being brand new).

Later I asked one drunk girl, "Do you think a bunch of old guys with expensive cameras is sexy?" and she said, "Yes." We were all laughing hard.

There's a few of us who even bring old Nikon SLR's to meet-ups.

Would love to see some of your Nikon Rangefinder gear. I have one of those rare 35/1.8 Nikkors in LTM. What a great lens.

Cal

Funny you should say that, Cal. I have been eying on a 2005 black Nikon SP lately. Part of the reason is the 35/1.8 Nikkor that it has. Thinking of selling my hardly used DMR to fund it as an indulgent for myself for the holidays. As I have problem detaching myself with gears, the decision is a hard one. I will bring the SP with me to one of the future meeting ups, if/when I get it. RFs has been slowly but surely eating up the share in my RF/SLR mix!

The 35/1.8 Nikkor is remarkably sharp and for B&W the negatives have this special pop to them. I say the sharpness rivals any modern lens including any ASPH version. Then there is this huge dynamic range as far as contrast. Very easy to distinguish a 35/1.8 Nikkor shot on a light table. Like I said the negatives simply pop. Also love the glow on highlights wide open. This glow is gone at F2.0. Easy lens to love.

I'd love a 2005 SP, but they are hard to find and costly. My only critcism is that the 35/1.8 has a slow 180 degree focus throw and close focus of only one meter. I want a 2005 SP so the 35/1.8 can permanmantly be mounted to a body. I wouldn't get another Nikkor lens. Its that good.

Cal

John,

Are you also considering getting one of those limited TA Rapidwinders for your SP? For me its almost a must have.

Cal

Even if she was humoring you, any woman who will willingly go to a camera gear geek fest is definitely a keeper!

I must be mighty annoying. My girlfriend always asks me when I'm next going to go out shooting.

Also when I recently told her that I'm getting a new lens that costs $4K she says, "No comment." LOL.
