It's interesting to hear you describe the artifacts as coma. I assumed they were during to something else because they are not centered around the light source.
I have no idea what causes them (although an earlier comment about reflections makes sense). They only occur when there's a bright, point source light in the frame. I have only seen these in night shots.

Exactly... which the 18mm is not really considered... or at least not compared to the larger, faster fuji lenses.
