... but I'm not sure that anything can look better than the Nikkor 85/2. I'll probably have to buy the 'Cron just to see, sometime, of course.

Thanks a lot. Yeah, when I went for an old 85, I just happened to find a cheap and battered (just the way I like 'em) Nikkor before a Canon.
 
The 8.5cm F2 Nikkor is an incredible lens. Pop Photo did a test of it in '91. It pretty much held its own against the modern marvels, even at F2.
 
even though i have the small & light 100/3.5 i can't bring myself to sell the 85/2 i also have.

there are times when i like that heavy feel and it doesn't hurt to have a bit more speed.

I like the weight on the M3, and (contrarily, there's a surprise) I like the long-throw focusing of the Nikkor. It's way more often than not wide-open, and I like to be able to approach the focus point precisely, not overshoot and have to fiddle around getting back.
