Film will stay, alongside digital, albeit no longer as the dominant medium.

So says Kodak.

'...an estimated nine out of 10 professionals use digital cameras — but of that number, Kodak estimates that two-thirds still use film for a portion of their work. Among consumers, Kodak says that half of U.S. households continue to use and process film and single-use cameras.'

Thanks for posting this Andy. It's the first reasonable explanation of the roles of both film and digital that I've read from Big Yellow. As with most things, I agree that the balance will end up somewhere in the middle - some only digital, some both, some only shooting film. The only thing that I didn't like was the short sighted comment from Mr.Rowe about the cost of film developing. I tried digital briefly, sold my Digital Rebel after about a year, and lost a little less than $400USD on the whole deal. I haven't done the math, but I could develop an awful lot of film for $400.

Something sensible from Big Yellow, I must be in an alternate universe. It does make a great change from all the gloom and doom as you say.

I wish Kodak would make up its mind. 😎

I don't trust 'em...wait till they have another crappy quarter and watch them cut the film business off at the knees.

Use Ilford products 🙂

Craig: I haven't made up my mind, and I favour Ilford due to its committment to b&w. But if everyone did exclusvielyt as you say, Kodak would surely discontinue film, including Tri-X.

FWIW, I hope Kodak film sales are strong and continue to support the workforce here in Rochester. I'd like to get a good price for my house this Spring. Hope that puts it in perspective for you.

I disagree with that suggestion.

1) Sometimes I like to shoot color - Ilford doesn't make that stuff!

2) The more film makers the better the prices for me (let K and F keep in competition).

Why would you look upon "good news" in such a negative way? Cripes!

CZeni said it. Do you trust Kodak? I don't. Besides their pricing (even when you go to the NYC discount stores like B&H) at least for B&W is way over what competitors like Ilford are charging. Looks to me like Kodak is trying to price themselves out of the market...

Peter,

I buy individual rolls at the Allkit store on 50th and 3rd. The K's T-Max 400 and I's HP-5 are the same price. 😉

I've been meaning to answer this for some time. This depends on who's boss or how long he's been married. 😎

You, Frank, are apparently still too young and naive. You will learn, you can never be the boss. Accept this and all life becomes easy.... 🙂

Well, I must say, somewhat mixed news. I am glad they recognize film as a viable medium. On the otherhand, I hope they still keep up Tri-X.

But it probably isn't enough that they continue to manufacture a winner. Innovation is a sure sign of vitality. Does anyone else think this? Film is at its best, and it would be great if someone would give a shot of innovation to the black and white world. A nice fast film would be nice... or an ISO 800 film.

Interesting a positive news from Kodak. I would hope their PR and marketing communications team have a good long look on what transpired for them over the last few years with really confusing messeges from people who matter in thier organization. I love Tri and Plus-X as a film as well as their funky Profoto asa 100 C-41 that Eduard brought back from the Ukraine.
What should be said, we want to be leaders in both the digital and film worlds, leave it at that. I would love to offer them advice on their messaging. My price is cheap one, m mount Zeiss 50/2 with hood.

You're right. You're like 2 & 1/2 years older than I. 😎

Ah yes, to the point that I have learned that sometimes, by letting management think she's the boss, labor gets its way.

I headed into the kitchen and was about to make the oatmeal cookies because the "boss" didn't want to do so.

Now, guess who's making the cookies!

Let management be management!

Despite Mel Brooks, sometimes it's good to be the pawn! 😛

I totally agree, let Kodak die! It is a giant wounded beast waiting to be put out of its missery. Buy ilford for b&w, their products are way supperior, and fuji for color. Kodak has already betrayed analouge photographers by cutting there b&w paper line.

DEATH TO KODAK!
