This is a heart wrenching essay with hauntingly beautiful photographs. Well worth reading.

I also saw this earlier today. Those women are heroes.
EDIT: Said "girls" initially because that's the language the article uses, but I'm pretty sure you get your adult card when you defy a terrorist organisation, putting your life on the line to save others.

Boko Haram is especially horrid. They are cowardly old men, who take out their hatred of youth and females by doing this kind of stuff. Bravo to the girls. The photography pales in comparison to the heroism.
(DrMcCoy: yes girls. The bad guys are tried to steal their childhood. Let's not - they've earned a few more years.)

NYT Lens has some of the best photo essays on the internet. shame it's such a pricey subscription model to read more than 5 per month.

There is something so much more powerful about stories told in this way than via video.
For me, it gives me time to pause and think before I continue reading.
Thanks for sharing, wonderful storytelling.

I think you can see their photo essays here for free (not sure, since I subscribe to the delivered newspaper): https://lens.blogs.nytimes.com

Haunting photo essay, so incredibly sad to have your childhood snatched away like that.

I used to feel the same way but with the state of modern 'news,' I felt obliged to contribute to keep real journalism alive. I'm still feeling the pangs of guilt every time I visit the Guardian UK site and the "we have a favor to ask..." message pops up at the bottom of the article.
I can't imagine being 12 years old and making the awful decision to go detonate the bomb strapped to your body away from other people in order to save their lives. Good god.

So sad to see this happening, no quarter to any Boko Haram member! Seen similar actions like this from the VC in Nam.
