Get your high ISO cameras ready and your cameras with TTL Flash. Remarkable shooting opportunities, but be aware of huge crowds.

Last year John (JSRockit) got some remarkable shots shooting high ISO digital, while I got skunked trying to do B&W handheld. This year I'm ready with a Pentax 67II with AE prism and TTL flash.

Me too, I checked their website and have a list of venues around Soho that are not too far from each other, so it will be an easy walk to switch to another location if one is totally overcrowded.
Any venue recommendations from the 2 experienced folks?

Last year SoHo was a mob scene. It was so crowded that cell phone towers were overloaded with volume and it was still light out.

Definately check out 5th Ave and 57th Streets. Berdorf had live models in their window displays, and on 57th Street they had a stage set up on the sidewalk with live models doing a cakewalk rotation. I imagine Bryant Park to be another good location.

Last year I tried to do available light hand held, and I got skunked. I suggest that you need to have a TTL rig and flash if you are shooting film, or have a digital camera that does high ISO well.

BTW I'll be dressed in Paul Smith for the ocasion wearing what my girlfriend calls my "Runway Pants." LOL. I'll be also sporting a Pentax 67II with AE prism, hot shoe grip, and Pentax's most powerful TTL flash. Hopefully I don't blind too many pedestrians. LOL.

Hey John,

Did you know that the Marx Brothers came from your neighborhood (Yorkville) when it was poor.

Chico originally put on a heavy Italian accent to play a tough guy as a kid and later incorporated it into his persona so he wouldn't get beat up, even though he was Jewish/German and French. Sound familiar? Remind you of anyone on this forum with a confused identity?

Anyways I often pass the Marx Brothers playground on my walk to work and wondered about the connection.

If I'm Chico, your Groucho. LOL.

It sounds an exciting night, unfortunately I'live on the other side of the ocean ! Please post some pictures, I'll enjoy them! Thanks

and a new title under your name. 😉

John,

I'm not sure it that is true, but I'll take it as a compliment. To be honest I think out of everyone that goes to the meet-up John C. is like the guy with the most gear. Who else do you know that shoots with the same Cooke lens on an 8x10 view camera that Ansel Adams claimed to be his favorite.

And then there is Tung...

BTW between Tung and John saying that between the two of them that they have the complete Leica catalog is not too much of an exaggeration.

Anyways I think my legacy is big heavy film cameras that are all pimped out with grips. Of course this is exacerbated because I'm a lanky skinny guy.

I couldn't resist Cal.

Its cool, and perhaps its even true. LOL.

Like do I really need a Leica II (Model D) in LTM with black paint and chrome knobs?

Perhaps that's why all those total strangers come up to me when we shoot; or why I'm almost a tourist atraction; or like at the last meet-up those two girls came up to me with their Mamiya 6...

This is a bump.

I have three rolls of Velvia 50 in 220 to pump through my Pentax 67II with TTL flash. I'll promably/likely blind a few people because as you know I have the most powerful intergrated flash made for my rig. If you see bright flashing Thursday night it probably is me.

with Velvia at 50 you'll need all the light your flash is able to blast out there. I'll try M9 at ISO1000 and f=1 😀

Cal I would go with Portra 400 if I were you. Velvia 50 is so slow that you would loose any/all ambient light and be completely dependent on flash. I guess if thats the look you want then it's ok but still give portra a try. It's got a very wide DR and you might get more interesting shots.
