Today we got delivery of free Covid kits from the government.

”Maggie” says I should send in for my share of 4 kits.

They come in handy. We just went though the last three old kits.

We will get Flu shots tomorrow, but no Covid booster.

Maggie is living with two side effects of the vaccine: dry mouth; and ten-night-tiss (Ear ringing). Pretty much these side effects happen in older people. Maggie is 70.

The Santa Cruz Model “F” I had custom built for me amazes me every time I play it. The sound just gets bigger, fuller, and louder. The bass is beginning to boom.

Pretty much now I am certainly “priced-out.”

Pay offs like my Santa Cruz require a bit of sacrifice. “The money has to come from somewhere,” I always say.

I remember when I was being called “a rich dentist who could afford to buy into Leica” as an insult. These were punk kids who felt mighty entitled. Pretty much jerks.

I walked to save $2.75 MetroCard fares; I bought my lunch to work; I bought stuff only when on sale; I don’t drink alcohol; I don’t smoke; didn’t own a car; and I saved lots of money.

Anyways, this year will be tough because I spoiled myself last year. I’ll be penny pinching this year. Last year was a blast and a lot of fun.

I was able to do 9 pullups in a set this morning.

As an artist, I know at times I live in a world of ideas that point to delusion and fantasy. I also know and understand how mental attitude and positive thinking can effect outcomes.

But I am a man of science and I believe in numbers, statistics, and data…

Anyways I try to realize my fate determined by genes, outlook, financial security, luck and probable outcome. I kid around about being murdered, beaten to death, or killed. Could happen, but perhaps not highly probable. Anyways, I hope not.

Because I’m a smut queen, I love data, information, news, and unique perspectives that are well done/performed. Because of a friend here we bought an Almanac.

Did you know that only 1.3% of Americans have a perfect credit score of 850. I’m one of them.

Another fact is the trend to small size into living spaces. We have been before the trend with green space and promoting nature, indoor green space, letting our yard go natural, and making a smaller footprint.

Right now I recognize that while I have strength, I lack fitness. Pretty much I love having a boyish body, and while I like some of the added bulk and the sculptural curves, I don’t want to outgrow the cloths I wear. Since I’m a skinny bitch I favor tight fitting clothing that flatters a lean muscular build, but perhaps my butt is getting exaggerated, and I don’t want to compete with Kim K. Or J-Lo. Pretty much I don’t want to gain any more weight or mass.

In the spring I will likely lean out. I’ll shed the water weight and the tiny love handles. Actually likely too small to be really called love handles, but let’s say two or three hamburgers. I see where I have to pivot of sorts. AJ is likely more strong than ever having gained about 15 pounds of muscle, but at a certain point the added weight can hurt performance and can be a liability.

He says the added weight is a benefit to his motorcycle riding because the bikes are built for a 180-185 pound rider, but for biking he feels like it is crossing over to a liability.

I have a goal to start doing rides over 100 miles every week. I would like to have the endurance developed when the weather first breaks, and if I concentrate on rowing I know I can build out the necessary base to have the fitness and endurance. I also realize that I am old and I produce less HGH (Human Growth Hormone). I know to get where I want to be requires more time and especially a daily routine that moderates intensity.

I basically see the limits of strength development, and recognize my deficit in fitness to achieve my goal to be an endurance athlete. I see how I need to also be gentle with my progress, eat right, rest enough, and add variety to really not have any weakness. I think my goal is plausible.

*************************

Separately I’m digging into a term called “Failure of Imagination” that originally started as a military term. Pretty much science fiction is now the new reality, and visionary thinking is being embraced from science fiction writers. This term was created by a General who coined this phrase in writing a book about when and if China attempts to reclaim Taiwan.

Pretty much thinking now is beyond imagination. Kinda interesting that I find myself in that same unsettled space of possibility and probability.

I remember reading Alvin Toffer’s book called “The Fourth Wave” back in the early 80’s. Pretty much it predicted “The Age of Information,” and cited Operation Desert Storm as being basically the first war that used information as a weapon, using precision weapons, smart bombs, advanced C-3 (Command, Control and Communications) to great effect.

Pretty much science fiction was reality. This was about 4 decades ago…

****************

The idea of co-writing a book with “Maggie” is fraught. Pretty much I’m too much of a non-conformist to ever deal with the BS she had to deal with.

I though of a title “The New/Old” as an interesting title that would engage curiosity. I figure a short non-discript title might set a hook and make some readers pick up a book and read more. Pretty much a tease of sorts that would target a certain reader profile, but that is not how it works in the publishing industry.

I guess Maggie and the publishing industry don’t understand the culture of “click-bait.” Oh-well… If I do anything it would be just a web site so I could have “free-expression,” no constraints, and most importantly no BS. I don’t need any mass audience, and a cult following with me is just fine.

Then again this is kinda what I have here… Pretty much what more do I need?

************

Back to the Almanac: Pretty much I will use the Almanac to help me frame planning out my year. Since I’m in austerity mode I need to be practical and go with the flow. Last year was about spending lots of money: this year the opposite. In photographic terms: contrast. Know that high contrast gets perceived as having more sharpness because of clear edge definition.

Life has ups and downs, so it is best to embrace flexibility. Also sometimes it is best to not have plans and just live.

I’m tempted to try and do another set of pull-ups, or just do a max set of pushups and do some rowing. I figure rowing is the best good for fitness. Don’t really need strength so much As evidenced by my 30 second sprint yesterday. Would like to max out at a 60 second sprint today.

Makes sense to just do the max set of push-ups to do maintenance, then see how I row, building on what I did yesterday. This is where keeping a journal is helpful and motivating. If after rowing I could always do other sets of pull-ups or pushups.

Doing 20 minutes of rowing with a sprint creates a strong base of mixed cardio anaerobic and aerobic fitness. I could build up to two sets maybe today, and eventually three sets. My experience with rowing is that fitness builds fast. The machine is a progressive load and an ERG. Likely a better workout, meaning harder than biking. Uses more muscle groups also.

The rowing machine really helps you pump lots of blood. Surely will increase my capacity, endurance, and speed. I know from the past that I will get rapid results, but nothing like being in the outdoors, feeling the breeze, and taking in the beauty of a long bike ride, and feeling that glow on your body. Work now: play later.

BTW I’m cool with tailing less fit riders just to relax. I intend on tailing Maggie just to do maintenance like walking a dog. Also long walks and hiking. I can always jump on the Concept 2, burn calories, and do an efficient workout. Fitness is not only biking.

Anyways thanks for listening to my daydreaming and rants. Even loners need to express themselves.

The Saudi’s are trying to kill U.S. fracking by flooding the market again.

U.S. Fracking is at record levels, and currently the U.S. is now the biggest exporter of oil, no longer the Saudi’s.

Understand that fracking is costly to produce, and to support the cost of extraction oil prices need to be north of 60 dollars a barrel. In the past fracking wells were caped and taken out of production because of market manipulations that made oil price drops that made fracking unprofitable by eliminating margins.

In other words the Saudi’s and OPEC+ have done this before to get back market share.

Add to this that the U.S. is now increasing purchases of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) as long as oil remains below $76.00 a barrel if I remember correctly. The filling was 2.3 million barrels and was increased to 3 million per month.

Know that in. 2021 the SPR had a big drawdown when Russia invaded the Ukraine.

So now we have an oil tug of war. Exporting oil has become a big part of our economy. Know that 4 out of 5 recessions are due to energy prices. Also since the U.S. has been flooding the market that this skewed the CPI lower and is largely responsible for the FED in judging inflation is under control.

The factor in that oil is priced in dollars, and that oil exporting is vital and important to control our deficient.

Understand the ramifications of the boom and bust cycle that involves fracking in the U.S. The Saudi’s and OPEC+ have the power to undercut U.S. production and basically undermine fracking profitability. Also understand that shutting down oil production and starting again is a delayed process and is also costly to do.

This cycle has been performed before, but there a lot more conflicts and complications going on. The Saudi’s likely will have difficulties getting oil to Europe because of the Red Sea and the Suez Canal bottleneck. Going around the Cape of Africa surely costs more. Then add that China is getting oil from Russia and the exchange is not dolloraized. Know that China is the largest importer of energy.

The headline is that the Saudi’s are trying to gain back market share, but I don’t think at this time they can overcome some of the logistics.

For sure low oil prices hurt Russia. If the world economy slows down expect falling prices for oil. Basically oil is an economic weapon. China is kinda stagnating, and pretty much has a housing and debt crisis.

Here in the U.S. we also have a bit of a debt crisis: in commercial real estate; and with consummer credit card debt that now exceeds one trillion dollars for the first time. Basically many Americans are using credit cards to maintain their lifestyle. Oh I forgot the automotive loan debt burden. Pretty much some say bad car loans is about as bad as the 2007-2008 housing crisis that kinda had liar loans to people with bad credit able to buy and lease cars and trucks they otherwise could not afford.

Anyways, keep an eye on oil prices. Could be the trip wire that leads to a bad collapse that cascades into a probable debt crisis. Been a while since we had a world recession.

The Washington Post feature I mentioned yesterday seems to be going back and forth between the editor and writer. Publication is expected next week.

I forgot to mention that filling the refilling of the SPR also makes a bit of a floor to dampen any oil price drop, pretty much to dampen price fluctuations.

Another way of looking at the situation is that the Saudi’s need to seek more oil to get in revenue. Might not be to undermine U.S. fracking. Oversupply or excess capacity is deflationary… Just keep this in mind. By definition Deflation is excess supply.

Today’s row was 25 minutes, 5 minutes longer than yesterday, but no sprint.

Only a baby-step, and tomorrow is another day. The bigger picture will be to do some fitness every day. With the rowing I expect a long-slow buildup. There is no resting on an ERG. I’m not in a bad range of speed to handle a steady output. In fact I’m impressed with what I am doing so far.

There is this thing called Angiogenesis, which is an increase in vascular inaction, meaning a growth of arteries and veins to support blood flow. What I’m doing actually encourages Angiogenesis over the sprint or interval training. That conditioning can come later.

I need to get into being able to row an hour or more before sprints or intervals begin. As far as intervals go I can just do 10 full out strong pulls, then rest-recover before doing another interval again. Eventually I would like to do a 1500 meter sprint and see how I can do it in the least amount of time.

These types of exercise is not only about aerobic threshold, but also about threshold of pain. Pretty much the deprivation of oxygen is like choking yourself. After a good workout your eyes are bloodshot from the oxygen deficiency.

Basically steady progress by daily exercise.

The Concept 2 is a great asset. It really is too cold to be outside, and even if there are forest fires in Canada again I can still workout indoors with purified air because I now have two Dyson air purifiers. Loss of momentum is an easy way to break stride.

I hope to do a set of max pushups, and then tomorrow is another day.

Today on Amazon “Maggie’s” book jumped from number 80 to number 30 in the category of Memoir. That didn’t take long.
Pretty much this number reflects pre-orders from individuals, and not book stores, book buyers at a commercial/institutional level, and libraries.

Her book is still pegged at number one in the Gerontology catagory.

The flattering review from Kirkus will get published on January 15th, and then a big surge of sorts is expected. That’s when things get serious, and the real ground swell begins. This is less than a week away…

My elevated breathing when rowing irritates my sinuses. Pretty much just dry air and humidity around 40% or lower. It takes a few hours for a drip to stop, and for everything to normalize. A side effect of sorts.

I’m also in love with the Santa Cruz Model “F” affectionately known as “Hog” because it is made of all mahogany, even the top. This guitar I bought for little money, and basically was a ten year old guitar that someone custom ordered, but went unplayed and unloved. Basically when I got it is was as if brand new, really stiff, boxy, with a muffled tone because it really had not been played at all. Effectively a brand new guitar.

I think in the breaking in the Hog kinda leap frogged the Model “F” I custom ordered. Adirondack red spruce is famous for taking mucho time to break in. I learned this from the Santa Cruz OM made with old growth Brazilian Rosewood because It features a red spruce top. Pretty much took a few years to achieve it’s voice. The custom order Model “F” I ordered with an Adirondack top is only about a year old…

The Hog has a slightly deeper body, and the all mahogany body has a voice that is deep in fundamental with warmth a plenty. Pretty much makes for a great Jazz guitar because of the warmth, but also makes a really-really great blues guitar because it speaks with authority. Mucho loud.

Pretty much I’m spoiled and it is like having two hot girlfriends that are sisters. How crazy is that? Same body, they look the same, but different personalities. I love it. Both are screamers.

A pretty boring day overall: read part of the Almanac; exercised; played guitar. Very relaxing. I don’t miss work.

Pulled out my old Santa Cruz OM. The sound from the two Model “F’s” is bigger. In fact they are bigger bodied guitars that have more volume and a bigger sound. The OM now sounds like a small guitar.

Interesting…

I’m thinking of going down a gauge on the strings on the OM. It has a really nice V-neck and with light strings it will play like an electric. It really can’t compete with the other two Santa Cruzes. An interesting development.

A playful day.

When I was a kid/teenager I worked out and did sports to see what I was made of. I was a skinny boy, and in ninth grade I ony weighed 89 pounds. Later in high school I eventually grew to about 132 pounds, but I was a lot stronger than other kids my size.

On the football team we took turns bench pressing free weights with heavy sewer like plates. My guess is the barbell weighed 150 pounds, guys my size could bench press it 2-3 times, but I did it 6 times. The coach was astonished and said, “You are lean, but mean.

I had mucho speed and instant acceleration back then.

I mention that in a way I regressed to that time in high school, where I wondered what I would do over the next 40-45 years. I was worried and in a state of anxiety because a lot of uncertainty lay ahead. Now I regress again, my fitness pursuit is to see and discover where I stand as a man physically just like back in high school.

Back in high school I did not consider my bony build an advantage, but now I see that I am built for longevity and the long run. Lucky me that I’m not monsterly big that strains the joints, back and heart.

Pretty much what I am doing is a regression back to the age of high school, wondering about the future, but perhaps less panicked and less worried, even though the world is a hot mess. I am testing myself to see and understand what kind of man I am. I’m not so scared like I was back then, and pretty much at this age I really know who I am.

I don’t think Snarky Joe was wrong when he said, “A guy like you can do anything well.”

I will tell you though that I’m kinda going slow with my progress. It would be a mistake to be aggressive in building up. I know my core is a weak point, and it will take some time to get where I need to be. This is also a reason why. I vary my exercises to not leave the risk of underdevelopment.

I now have lower levels of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) so I understand that any buildup has to be slow and steady.I have reasonable expectations. Know that biking and rowing are both gentile on the joints, and “Maggie” and I intend on utilizing the public pool in Peekskill and adding swimming to our routine.

It seems like hiking needs to be limited because it beats up your joints a bit and is not so gentile. The descents create a tightness in my knees.

I guess the moral of the story is sustainability. Pretty much the Concept 2 rower will get me to the warm weather where I should have a sturdy base, towards the end of March I should have a sturdy base established, anyways this is the goal. After doing the “maintenance” rides with Maggie, I can always jump on the Concept 2 to get what I need.

Maggie intends on doing her walks to the downtown to write, exercise, and socialize, meanwhile I can use these times to go off riding by myself. I expect my blood pressure to go mucho low. Because I have such a small body below 100/60 with a resting BPM below 50.

I figure I should be up to the challenge of long rides that exceed 100 miles at least once a week. Not an unreasonable goal because the rowing is a condensed tough workout.

I sacrificed my fitness for the sake of getting lots of heavy lifting done on the house, but in the meantime I developed some strength. 2024 will be a pivot and definitive turning point where I will commit to getting UBER fit.

I have about 20 packs of Fuji FP-100 I need to shoot.

Devil Christian 3-D printed a Polaroid back and gifted it to me. Works great on my Baby-Linhof’s. The limitation is there is no dark slide, but committing to shooting an entire pack is no big deal.

Of course carrying a Baby-Linhof around kinda makes one into a bit of a tourist attraction. BTW anyone caught carrying a Linhof around, a very heavy German camera, kinda stands out as someone a bit crazy. The only other person I know that carries around a Linhof I know is Devil Christian, and you know he is a bit crazy. He basically is the epicenter for Linhof-Disease.

So for 2024 I need to think of a project to shoot this expired film. One idea s just go walking around with one of my Baby-Linhof’s. I have a Tech IV that has the original cam for the Zeiss 100/2.8 Planar. It came with an advertised separation, so I got the entire kit with mucho accessories for “no-money.”

I figured it was like buying a lottery ticket. The Zeus’s 100 Planar in mint condition with no issues sell for mucho big dollars, and I know I’m a lucky fool. So I sent it off to John at Focal Point to get repaired. Pretty much the Balsom optical cement needs to be softened by boiling in water, and pretty much the gamble is that a lens element could get destroyed And shatter.

If a failure, you still have to pay anyways. Oh-well. High risk: high reward. So pretty much I got the lens repaired so it is fresh and effectively as new, but with a modern optical cement. Lucky me. Then shortly thereafter John at Focal Point retired and the service I received became no longer available. Am I a lucky dog? Rough-Ruff.

BTW you should know that the 100/2.8 Planar is worth the big dollars. It is a wonderful inspiring lens. Nice thing is that it folds into the Tech IV. Devil Christian calls this camera a museum piece because it is so clean and has all the accessories. A mighty cool camera that pretty much is a free gym membership because it is so heavy.

Want an ugly thick fat neck like a football player: wear a Linhof around your neck. Want to have cut oversized bicep on your left arm, then mount a wonderful ergonomic Linhof grip and carry it around mounted to your left arm. Like I said a free gym membership, and perhaps there is a reason why few people carry around Linhof’s.

I somehow stumbled into a Baby-Linhof Tech V that has no serial number and lacks movements. What is mighty cool about this camera is that it pretty much can be called a Linhof folding camera, and it is more compact and smaller than the Tech IV. It too could be called a museum piece. Pretty much a prototype.

For a lens I secured at a reasonable price a Zeus’s 53/5.6 wide angle that is a highly regarded lens. The bad is that is both huge and heavy. This kinda nullifies the compactness of the Tech V. I also secured a cam. Of course this camera does not fold, and more or less the camera is what our friend John would call a “Monster.” Which is kinda one of my trademarks.

Then I loaded the truck up with Grafmatics. I have 10 or 12 of them. These in a book bag are also mucho heavy. Then I have CINE backs for 70mm films and 120 backs. Some are 6x9, others are 6x7, and I even have a 645. How cool is that?

Ideally I either have to trim the corners of the lens mount on the 100/2.8; or better just get another lens mount with trimmed corners to mount the Planar on the compact Tech V to basically have an UBER cool folding Linhof with an outstanding normal lens. How cool is that? I don’t want to destroy any museum quality.

Then I have a Plaubel 69W with a 47/5.6 Augulon that is effectively a 21mm FOW in 6x9 that has perspective control. Only 8 shots in a roll of 120, but EZ-PZ loading.

I also have other medium format like Texas Leicas with an assortment of lenses, Rolliflex Whiteface…

Anyways another daydream… Know that I loaded up the truck with 2x3 sheet holders, I have racks, and dip and dunk capabilities stored in my basement.

I know I can annoy many-many people. I have a lot of “You suck factor.” LOL.

I learned from “Maggie” if you want to stand out, don’t do what everyone else is doing.

Cal

Devil Dan,

My hero. Also the way you do things has mucho “You suck factor.”

Did I tell you that , “You suck.” LOL.

Anyways we live in a world filled with mediocrity. Who wants to be “Extra-Medium?”

Also I ENCOURAGE your OCD tendencies. Mucho cool.

”Crazy is good.” I say.

Cal

BTW Snarky Joe has mucho “You suck factor” because he owns a remarkable Linhof. Museum quality with the great 4x5 Zeus’s Planar for a 4x5.

It was really mean when he kinda crushed me at a Meet-Up with pretty much the ultimate Linhof ever.

“Brutal,” I say. This camera still haunts me.

Cal

Today I graduated to 10 pullups.

After doing a max set, I try to do another max set, without much rest, and was only able to do 8. Pretty much later today perhaps another max set, but maybe only 6. This seems to be what my old man body can do.

For the diminished level of Human Growth Hormone due to aging nutrition is vital to improvement. I learned decades ago that protein for me was like the fountain of youth and for my particular body chemistry. Basically I am somewhat a carnivore that requires mucho protein. Best to have steady doses of protein throughout the day.

I figure I must be doing right because of the results.

I carry about 5 pounds of “winter-weight.” Perhaps I weigh about 155, maybe 158 the most. Probably about as much as I ever weighed. Muscle is more dense than fat, so I figure I might never go below 150 pounds again, unless I loose lean muscle mass at this point.

Understand that AJ is my size, 5’10”, but has about 30 pounds more muscle than me.

If AJ is right, by the end of January I might be up to 12 pullups by adding one per week. The next would be 20 which I never-ever was able to do. 15 was my best, but I was very young.

Trader Joe’s white eggs are still $1.49 a dozen. I eat 4 eggs for breakfast every day, but only one yoke. Been eating lots of salmon, and then I usually consume plant based protein like hummus or lentils.

The 5 pounds will get burned off in the spring with more aerobic exercise. Maybe the rowing will speed the weight loss. At this rate I might be 155 and be all muscle. “Lean, but mean.”

Today house guests, and I’ll be baking a lasagna for lunch. Glad I had it in the freezer. Now it is in the oven already defrosted.
I’ll start the baking in about 15 minutes. Convection oven.

On the Internet Lisa Rinna is getting a lot of press lately. There is a shot posted that might be for or part of a feature in Cosmopolitan where it is a profile side shot with her covering her boobs with her arms. She is 61 and looking mighty hot, but in a headline she basically utilizes hormone replacement therapy, even though this increases Cancer risk which runs in her family.

No hormones for me. What it is, is what it is. Let’s see if I can go 5 more decades. This would put me in the area of the oldest man who ever lived. For me a second life…

Cal

Pretty much the oldest man was about 116.

I want a good quality of life. I saw my dad suffer in pain for decades, he was handicapped, and his quality of life was rather poor.

So far not for me. If I was killed tomorrow I already had a remarkable a great life. The possibility of 50 more years is a possibility in my case. Good genes, ideal BMI, no meds.

Anyways, I hope for the best.

The average life expectancy in the U.S. is now 76.4 years BTW. Covid, suicide, and opioid deaths has lowered expected life expectancy. One report cites that men now have a lifespan 6 years shorter than women.

I also have a theory that a lot of screening and preventative medicine got bypassed for a few years due to Covid. An unintended consequence will be a higher mortality rate I think. I know it took a rather long time to catch up and get up to date. For many I don’t think could afford the time and money to play catch up.

Not a lot of time to waste. The average suggests at my age of 66 I only have about 16 years left. Pretty much I expect to be an outlier.

BTW Social Security used 82 as the average not too long ago.

Cal

I surprised myself 7 more pullups in the third set. 10-8-7. My thinking was only expecting 6.

”Maggie” was in conversation yesterday with a big news legend that she had been interviewed by before. Pretty much a few DM’s and now Maggie has an interview coming up in February right before her book launch.

Separately our agent’s assistant wanted to know if we would be able to travel to Washington DC. Something tentative is brewing that relates to broadcast TV and PBS.

Also what got firmed up is the writer who Maggie wants to be in conversation with agreed to participate. We met this writer in Brattleboro Vermont at a book conference recently. Things are shaping up and moving forward.

Like I said, “A ground swell” is beginning…

The house smells great because of the baking.

The Lasagna came out great. 2 hours of baking at 400 for this small tray. I still have enough for a meal leftover for me and “Maggie.” Old people don’t eat a lot, except for me.

In lew of developing film cooking does it for me. I think similar skills, but one is made for the eyes, and the other for the mouth and nose for the sense of taste.
